Before this chapter begins, there are some parts that'll look like this: (hi there). This means the person is thinking, not speaking.
3RD POV
Thunder rolled over the capital. Screams echoed through burning streets, swallowed by the storm above. The sky churned ash-gray, lightning tearing through it as cinders fell like snow, coating the ruined city. What was once pride and power had become chaos and fire. Through it all, a winged Nightmare soared, carrying Nicholas high into the storm. Broken roots still bound him as he struggled in its grip. Far below, Hunter and Zana fought against the branches trapping them, as they too were carried.
The creature climbed higher, black wings cutting through the clouds. Lightning flashed, revealing its twisted form. Nicholas fought to break free, but couldn’t. His hands were free… but useless. If he cut the creature’s legs, they’d all fall to their deaths. If he did nothing, they’d reach the clouds, which would also be a death sentence, considering all the metal they had, increased odds of being struck by lightning. He had to think. Now!!
Crack.
Crack.
Crack.
Looking down, he saw the roots that connected him to his companions cracking.
Nicholas: - No, no, no....!!
He tried to tighten his grip, tried to pull the roots back together, but it was no use.
SNAP!!
For a single, weightless second, time slowed. Hunter's eyes widened in shock. Zana's hand reached upward through the rushing wind; her voice lost in the roaring storm. Then gravity reclaimed them.
Zana: - NICHOLAS!!
They fell. Nicholas's instincts took over. He braced himself, forcing his trembling arm forward. If he didn't do something now, his friends would die. Only one option remained. And it was now or never.
Nicholas: - GRAPPLER!!
The tree-trooper reacted. Roots wrapped around his arm, then burst outward, twisting and latching onto the nightmare's neck. The creature lurched backward, choking as the vines constricted around its throat. Seizing the moment, Nicholas swung his blade, cutting through one of its legs. The nightmare howled, spiraling downward in a chaotic spin. Wind and rain tore at Nicholas's face as he fought to steady himself.
Nicholas: - COME ON!!
With a desperate cry, he climbed along the tangled roots, his body soaked by the storm. Finally, he reached the beast's back and drove his sword deep into the exposed flesh near its shoulder. The nightmare shrieked, wings convulsing, as they plummeted even faster. Lightning split the sky above, turning the entire scene into a flash of blinding white. The powerful winds nearly blinded the protagonist, but he kept squinting his eyes, barely able to see.
The nightmare kept trying to shake him off, but Nicholas grabbed the back of the its head and forced it down. He had no idea if this would work, but if that thing had no sanity, then it most likely acted on its animalistic instincts. Which meant, it would hunt for prey. And sure enough, by some miracle, the monster's gaze was fixated on the falling forms of Zana and Hunter. Its wings folded back, hands on each side, body straighter, speed increasing drastically. With its one remaining foot, it grabbed Zana by her left arm.
Nicholas: - ZANA!! HOLD ON!!
Claws dug into the girl's arm, halting its descent with a violent jolt that nearly tore her shoulder from its socket.
