NICHOLAS POV
I woke up gasping for air, my body drenched in sweat. No... it wasn't a nightmare this time. Not like the usual ones. But I did have the strangest dream. Hunter and I... transported to another world. A place filled with magic and monsters.
Crazy, right?
...Right?
I glanced around the room left, then right, and my heart dropped. We were still here. In her house. Selin's home.
Wait...
That means it wasn't a dream.
Oh...
Oh, this is bad.
Or... is it?
What am I even thinking? Of course it's bad. We're stuck in some fantasy world, surrounded by things that could kill us at any moment....and we can't go back.
...Home.
Is it really home?
Yes! Mum and Dad will be devastated when they realize I'm gone!
...Mum and Dad.
The words felt wrong. My hands began to tremble. I didn't even notice the tears until they were already falling. Will I be missed? Will they cry for me?
...No.
No, they won't.
They're probably happier this way. Everyone must think we died in the fall; that the river carried us off somewhere. They won't care. If anything, they'll feel relieved. Their "little mistake" is finally gone. I wiped my face with my sleeve. I know I should feel sad. And I do. But there's another part of me, one that feels....lighter.
Like maybe...
Just maybe...
This world could give me something mine never did.
A chance at life.
A good life.
...No.
Stop it.
Why am I getting my hopes up? No one cares about me. No one ever has. No one ever will. So what's the point?
But still... What if things here are different?
I shook my head and rubbed my eyes, letting out a tired yawn. Despite everything, the bed beneath me was softer than the one back home. Comfortable enough to almost pull me back into sleep. I slowly lay back down, staring at the ceiling, yet the pain didn't stop. That's when it hit me. How alone I really was. How... insignificant. And the quiet sound of tears falling into the fabric beneath me.
