The hotel room was soft-lit and silent, save for the faint hum of traffic several stories below. Zane sat cross-legged atop the bedspread, eyes closed, slow breaths drawing wisps of crimson energy from his skin.

Each exhale released them in gentle waves that shimmered, then dissolved into the air like dying fireflies.
A soft click of the door.
Marinette slipped inside and froze. For a long, aching minute she only watched him—this brother who'd died saving everything, who now breathed again as if the universe had simply rewritten its own obituary.
Zane never opened his eyes. "I can feel you staring," he said, voice even.
"Sorry..." Marinette murmured.
"Don't be," he answered, energy threads dispersing as he let the aura fade.
She crossed the room and lowered herself onto the edge of the mattress beside him, knees tucked together. Words tangled in her throat.
"Zane... you... I—"
"Take your time," he whispered.
She stared at her hands. "I just can't believe you're back. I've been trying to smile for you for so long... because that was the last thing you told me. Now you're here and... everything's different. I'm dating Adrien. There's a new Hawk Moth. Enemies keep getting stronger. I'm leading a whole team and I... I don't know how to do this."
Her voice cracked. She bowed her head, shoulders quivering.
Zane exhaled, dissolving the last flickers of power around him. He spoke softly, each word deliberate.
"Change is the great sculptor of the human spirit. It arrives uninvited—sometimes as a whisper, sometimes as a storm—and it reshapes the ground beneath our feet. Difference doesn't ask permission. It bends the familiar, fractures the expected, and forces us to confront who we are when the world refuses to stay still.
"But here lies the paradox: change can be the hammer that shatters us, or the forge that tempers us."
Marinette's damp eyes lifted. "What do you mean?"
"When we resist it, clinging to what was, every shift feels like a wound. We break—not because change is cruel, but because we refuse to bend." His gaze remained forward, calm. "Yet when we embrace it, even trembling, we find that difference isn't destruction; it's instruction. It teaches resilience, sharpens vision, reveals strengths we never knew we carried.
"Think of a seed buried in soil. To the seed, the earth pressing down feels like suffocation, but that pressure is the very condition for growth. The shell must crack for the sprout to rise. What looks like breaking is, in truth, becoming.
"Change will test you. It will strip away comfort, dismantle illusion, and demand roads you never planned to walk. But if you let it, change will build you into someone who can stand in storms without losing center.
