Monday morning rolled around a lot quicker than I would have liked. I blew out a sigh as I walked to my locker to grab my books for the day. I didn’t want to be here today, or ever for that matter. I spun the lock and opened my locker. What happened next completely blew my mind; a beautiful single blood red rose fell out. I stood there for a moment staring at it, wondering why the hell it would be in my locker and who it came from. Finally snapping out of my daze, I bent over to pick the rose up. There was a little card attached to a ribbon tied around the stem.

"If I could reach up and hold a star for every time you've made me smile, the entire evening sky would be in the palm of my hand."

There was no name signed to the card, no clue as to who had left me this beautiful flower. Getting love notes and flowers wasn’t something that typically happened to me; in fact this has never happened to me before. I wasn’t completely sure if I should peg this as some cruel joke by Veronica and her followers, Alex being sweet and trying to get back on my good side, or some random guy with a secret crush.

Confused, I grabbed my books and headed to Life Skills. Once I entered the room I quickly took my seat and prepared myself mentally for when Alex arrived. I was curious to see if he was gonna try anything today. I really hope he changes.

‘Don’t be stupid! That boy will never change and you know It.’ that annoying voice in the back of my head nagged.

‘Shut up! He will change, Alex is a good guy’ I argued back in my head.

‘Yeah right! And I’m the queen of England! Face it, your only setting yourself up with false hope.’

‘No I’m not!’

‘Yes you are!’

‘No’

‘Yes!’

“Maddie! Hello? Are you alive in there?” a voice interrupted my internal argument with myself. I must be going crazy if I’m arguing with a voice in my head. I turned to see that Alex had taken his seat next to me.

“Huh?” I replied stupidly.

He let out a laugh and shook his head at me. “You were pretty spaced out there. Daydreaming about me?”

“You caught me. I can’t get you out of my head.” I said sarcastically.

Alex just smirked at me like he knew even though I was being sarcastic, it was true. I couldn’t stop thinking about him.

“Ew Alex why are you talking to this waste of space to the human race?” Veronica’s high pitched whiny voice came from the desk in front of his.

“Because I can.” He said simply.

Honestly that wasn’t the response I was expecting. I’m so used to him ignoring me and automatically siding with whatever Veronica says. It was pretty nice to see him not blow me off or say something rude to me. Maybe he was changing.

“Please Alex, babe, why would you want to talk her. She’s not smart or good looking. I feel sorry for how ugly she is, but honestly Alex, I feel even sorrier for you and I for having to look at her.”

“Seriously Veronica, do me a favor and grasp your ears firmly and pull; you might just be able to remove your head from your ass.” I replied with a sweet smile on my face. No way was I gonna let her get me down. I didn’t know if it was the fact that I was secretly making out with her boyfriend behind her back, or if I had finally just had enough of her bullshit, but enough was enough with this dimwit already.

“Alex!” she screeched. “Are you going to let little miss nobody speak to me that way?”

Yeah Alex, I thought. Are you gonna let me get away with this? I glanced at him waiting for his answer. He looked back at me with pleading eyes. And right then and there, I knew he was going to side with her. He was going to break my heart more by sticking up for her.

So I sighed in defeat and braced myself for the pain that was soon to come. I gave a tight nod to Alex, telling him to just go ahead and get it over with already.

“Listen nerd, I don’t know who you think you are, but what gives you the right to talk to my girlfriend like that? Do it again and I’ll make sure that your life is made even more hellish than it already is.” I could see the pain in his eyes when he spoke those words to me, but I didn’t care at the moment. He still chose to side with her.

Veronica smiled triumphantly and kissed Alex on the lips before turning and smirking at the clear jealous expression on my face. She turned to take a seat, but before her (in my opinion rather large ass) hit the chair; she turned and grabbed the rose of my desk.

“What’s this?” she asked, reading the note attached.

I watched horrified at what she might say. A slow smirk made its way onto her over-glossed pink lips. Whatever she’s thinking can’t be good. Veronica looked up at me, an evil glint to her big chocolate brown eyes. Slowly, one by one she begins to pluck the rose petals off; dropping them to the floor without a care in the world.

“What the fuck are you doing, you stupid twat! That’s my flower, give it back!” I yelled, causing everyone’s attention to be drawn to us.

Veronica let out a humorless laugh as she ignored me and continued to pull the petals off the flower. “It seems you have a secret admirer. Though I can’t see what anyone would ever see in you. You don’t deserve this flower, pretty girls get flowers, and you Maddie are the furthest thing from pretty.” She sneered at me as she pulled the last petal off and tore the note in half.

I could feel the tears build in my eyes. Why did this bother me so much? I wasn’t even sure who the flower was from. I felt the stares of everyone in the room; my cheeks were crimson from embarrassment. So much for being strong and standing up to the evil whore! I didn’t want to be here anymore, I wanted to run for the hills. So that’s exactly what I did, though instead of the hills, I ran for the nearest girl’s bathroom and locked myself in the biggest stall. Slowly I slid down against the wall and let the tears flow freely.

Ok so I know that this is way way overdue, but life's been a little hectic lately and not only that, but I couldnt for the life of me get the words from my head onto paper. It was really driving me insane! Sorry this one is so short, but it's leading up to a lot of good stuff.
