Heaven does not strike to test the worthy.
It strikes when it fears what it can no longer command.
The Celestial Kingdom—Peony Pavilion, Present times
The room shimmered in the hushed glow of candlelight — soft skeins of gold and lavender that weaved a gentle enchantment through air already sweetened by incense and moonlit stillness. On the round rosewood table in the centre lay a painted scroll unfurled like a dream: jagged cliffs thrusting skyward, proud and ancient, their snow-white peaks gleaming against the midnight-blue vault as though they pierced straight into the breath of Heaven.
Mist coiled among those peaks — a pale, swirling shroud obscuring a perfect orb, veiling its glow with deliberate mystery.
At the bottom corner, written in elegant, feminine strokes, lingered the quiet promise:
守得雲開見月明*
A zephyr of night slipped through the partially opened windows, carrying the cool perfume of moonflowers and coaxing the candlelight into a lambent dance across the curtains that veiled the large bed like a sanctuary.
Within that sanctuary lay Fuxi and Nǚ-Wa, seeking warmth and comfort and love from each other after the cold and the dark and the wrath of earlier.
Primordial Gods. Part of the Three Sovereigns. Divine beings who were written in the oldest strata of Chinese myth—those twilight layers where history dissolves into symbol, gods feel half-formed, and the world is still cooling from the fires of creation.
They were all those to the Cosmos.
And they were more than those to each other.
Siblings. Soul mates. Lovers.
Nǚ-Wa lifted her head from Fuxi's chest. She looked deep into those beloved dark eyes that she had gazed into countless times since they took their first breaths, eyes that she knew as well as, if not better than, her own. They had held knowledge and secrets vast as the skies and deeper than the oceans, had shone with both wit sharp as cut jade and gentle affection warm as fresh spring.
Most of all, when they engaged in dances of intimacy as sensual as they were tender, his eyes had blazed with passion fiery as the kindling of fire that Zhu-Rong* had held, and love pure as first snow in the Snow Mountains.
But not this night.
On this night, his eyes were dark, rippling with trepidation and premonition, a quiet storm folding upon itself. And a quiet rage simmered beneath the calm surface, like lava beneath the cold mirror of a lake.
The Mother Goddess felt her heart twist. She opened herself fully to him, letting his emotions pour into her like a river breaking its dam. His dread. His sorrow. His quiet, suffocating reluctance. She absorbed them all, swallowing the ache so he would not bear it alone. "Fuxi," She rested her hand on his clammy cheek. "You don't have to do anything you don't wish to."
Her lips followed her hand, lingered there as she breathed in her mate's scent—warm, earthy, unmistakably him. But tonight, a sourish tang tainted it, unwelcome and unnerving. The odour of fear and reluctance.
Nǚ-Wa's stomach curdled, and wrath, the seed of which was first sown in her heart during the destruction of the first ancient immortal realm, began to sprout.
What right did Tian-Di—self-proclaimed First Ruler of Heaven—possess to toy with them, to demand complete subservience from them? To obliterate those who came before, those who refused to bow to Him? To charm with nectar promises into becoming his tools, his weapons, only to cast them aside callously like broken toys after use?
