The rain slashed across V's face as she dipped out into the open air, gasping as a bullet whizzed right by her ear. She looked up sharply to the rear of the racing cab and saw three Arasaka security drones chasing after them. They were low level, dipping and dodging street lamps, lights, and palm trees, the muzzle flash of their weapons marking them in the dark rain.
V swallowed. Focused.
Three drones. Two small escort and surveillance units, one big heavy hitter the size of a Rayfield engine.
Bullets pinged and snapped across Delamain's flank. V felt some ballistic glass shards mist past her ribcage, cutting.
The escorts were taking potshots, protecting the heavy hitter. They needed to go.
V raised her weapon. Let everything melt away into Focus.
Twelve bullets. Three drones. Four chances per.
Make it count.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The leftmost escort drone dipped to one side to dodge a light pole, then slipped back to the right towards the heavy hitter just in time to meet V's bullets. Her first shot took out the thing's "eye," the next two popping the engines. The drone let out a shower of sparks and dropped hard to the pavement, exploding into pieces.
V arced towards Delamain's roof, digging into some of the crumpled metal and glass with her fingers as she felt an anticipatory shift in direction. She grunted in pain as the jagged edges of the car tore into her fingertips while Delamain swung to the right, bumping off the curb. The drones followed, pausing their fire until they had a straight shot.
Now.
V flopped back and braced the pistol, centering her sights on the second escort drone.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The drone had learned her pattern already. It shot to the right, missing V's first bullet, but V learned quick too, and her next two bullets found their marks. The drone let out an electronic shriek and dove uncontrollably. It smashed into a stoplight, throwing sparks as it slid down the giant pole to the ground.
Scratch two. Time for the big guy.
"V, please note I will be making a left turn in approximately thirty seconds," Delamain's cool voice suddenly sounded from the taxi's interior.
"Copy," V replied flatly.
Thirty seconds. A turn. The drone would have to stop firing as it made the turn. If they could just-
Suddenly something bigger shot off of the bigger Arasaka drone.
"DEL! RIGHT!" V screamed, bracing herself.
Delamain immediately dodged to the right, just narrowly missing the small rocket aimed right for the rear tire. V hissed and brought up her weapon again.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
For being such a big drone, the thing was scarily maneuverable. It straight up dodged V's volley and hurled upward, using some overhead pipes and overpasses for cover.
BANG!
V hissed and took her finger off the trigger. It took all of her willpower to keep from firing at the damn thing through the openings in-between the pipes. She had to wait. Wait to make her attack count.
Delamain pulled sharply to the left, tires skidding on the wet and oily pavement. The drone crashed through some power lines and surged forward, running a line of machine-gun fire up the road towards the rear tires again.
