#79 The Christmas Lights

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays everyone!
Thank you for an amazing 2025, I appreciate you all so much for coming along with me on this writing journey 🫶

It honestly started off as me writing for shits and giggles because I legit didn't think anyone was going to read it, but here we are, over a year later and I've built the filthiest, most loving and hilarious audience I could ever have asked for 🥰

I will be spending Christmas and New Years with my family but trust me, the boys will without a doubt, make a return in 2026 🙂‍↕️

Back to the one shot:
Something short and sweet, some holiday wholesomeness Xx
Regulus is dating James, this is his first Christmas away from his family and he's spending it at the Potter's house. Regulus in our last Christmas themed one shot experienced a family Christmas dinner and mistletoe
This year I wanted to give him another cute something to experience as well because our little mermaid deserves it

Effie and Monty had the boys standing out in the snow with their newly knitted scarves, beanies and gloves. Remus, Sirius, James and Regulus didn't mind though because Effie always made sure Christmas time was special, and since this was Regulus' first Christmas Eve, she had the grand idea to go walk around the town and see all the Christmas lights.

"James" Regulus whispered, holding James' hand for warmth, "it's nice being together but can you explain Christmas lights please? I have no idea what your mum has been talking about and have felt too bad to ask her..."

James smiled with a small laugh, "she would take no offence if you asked her, she'd be mad at your parents for never showing you a proper Christmas but she'd not be offended. As for what they are, you'll see, I think you'll like them"

Regulus nodded cautiously, he assumed he was just going to go past glittery shops and houses but Sirius seemed much more excited for it and kept talking about snowmen and reindeer which Regulus had only just learnt was linked to the whole Santa thing.

"Reg I'm excited to spend Christmas with you this year, I'll be there in the morning and afternoon with you guys but after that I'll be taking the train back home to see my parents for dinner" Remus smiled, "also I know you said not to, but I got you a gift"

Regulus went red, "oh no Remus you didn't need to do that. I haven't gotten you anything, I'm sorry" Regulus was new to this but he should have anticipated someone like Remus would've been generous enough to think of him, "you're too good for my brother you know that right?"

Sirius stood back offended, "how dare you speak about me in such a way! I am a wonderful boyfriend thank you very much, Remus is getting exactly what he wants for Christmas from me!"

"Exactly what I want?" Remus grinned, sliding an arm around Sirius' waist, Sirius blushing. Regulus made a gagging noise but was secretly happy for his brother and for Remus, he looked back at James who had a snow ball in his hand, piffing it at Sirius.

Sooner than expected the boys were in a heated snow ball fight, with the brothers teaming up against their boyfriends. As they continued to throw things around they were all suddenly hit at the same time when Monty and Effie finally joined them outside. The boys stood back laughing as Monty high-fived his wife, "good shot love" and Effie smiled, "yes I thought so"

Everyone left the garden and began walking down the streets together, hand in hand as carols were sung and the smell of Christmas dinners filled the air, pouring out of every shop window. Regulus was simply walking along when he began to notice what James had been talking about, all the houses around town had lit their houses up with sparkling lights and Christmas themed charms.

"James look!" Regulus hadn't even realised he was verbally expressing the joy he was feeling as he shook James' jacket and pointed to a spell that was cast over one of the houses, a glowing Santa and his sleigh and reindeer flying on top.

"Told you, I knew you'd like them" James grinned at Regulus' childlike wonder, the different reds, golds, blues and greens all reflecting brightly in his usually grey eyes. Regulus' smile was bright as he watched the magic of the town light up, even the lantern posts had been wrapped with fairy lights.

Sirius pointed to the fountain near the middle of the town and they all saw the water light up, as it shot up into the air the usual blue changed into a shimmering gold that reminded Regulus of the star on top of the Potter's tree. Everyone around the fountain clapped and stood together happily as the snow started to fall lightly around them.

"It's beautiful" Regulus smiled, still marvelling at all the houses, he'd never expected such a simple holiday to bring so much joy and excitement to a town that was usually filled with the same brick style homes. James smiled, looking at Regulus as he hummed in agreement, "beautiful".

Regulus looked to James who was looking back at him in a day dream like trance, he couldn't help but smile himself. James Potter might've been the best thing to ever happen to him, not that he'd ever say that out loud, James' ego was already as big as his waist. But as Regulus stood there looking into his eyes, the glimmer of lights reflecting off of James' glasses, he felt a familiar warmth that had become associated only with James, a warm embrace around his heart that James only ever seemed to make him feel.

"I really do love you" James smiled, kissing Regulus' forehead as they stood in front of one of the dazzling houses, "I know I'm obnoxious and some might say a prick" James raised his eyebrow at Regulus, who nodded with no apparent disagreement, James rolled his eyes, "but you make me a better person, sometimes worse when we make terrible decisions together, but for the most part you quite literally are the most beautiful person I've ever met"

Regulus realised this would be the first time he would tell James this, he'd always agreed when James said it but never fully said those three words himself. Regulus took a deep breath as he stood listening to James, he interrupted quickly before he got too nervous to say it and looking into James' eyes, knowing it was real, he said them, "I love you"

James' eyes were sparkling even more so than before and even brighter than usual, "I love you" he repeated, "and I know, but it's nice to hear you say it as well"

"I'm sorry I haven't"

"Don't be sorry at all. Like I said, I knew, you have your own ways of showing it. I never wanted you to say it without you knowing if you were sure as well...I know I'm kind of a big deal" James put his hands up, lightening up the mood when he saw Regulus' head lowered, "it's alright to feel shy in my clearly irresistible presence"

"Don't make me break up with you." Regulus' lips lifted though when he saw James' "pout" as he heard those words which clearly were not meant to ring truth.

"Merry Christmas mon etoile" James lent forward, his lips hovering over Regulus', Regulus smiled at James' terrible French, "Merry Christmas mon amour" and kissed him.
