Zoey took her time returning back to the pack house, walking aimlessly in the darkened woods. She was vulnerable, having left all of her weapons in her room and she knew this but she wasn't fazed. The dark no longer frightened her nor did the noises that seemed to always follow her. She found solace in the unknown and welcomed it with open arms, unafraid of the consequences. The night clung to her, helping her hide as she made her way home.
"It's pretty late for you to be out here, you know." A voice growled, briefly catching Zoey off guard. She hesitated, stopping her advancement before she smiled, turning and coming face to face with Dakota. Her dark green eyes bore into Zoey's hazel orbs, no hint of playfulness present. She knew she had been caught, followed by her mate's best friend. Dakota had seen her with the enemy, heard her talking about the planned deaths and attacks. Despite her situation, she couldn't kill her. If she had been anyone else, she could have staged the death, making it seem like another attack but it had to be Dakota. It had to be the beta, the best friend, the ease dropper.
"I will admit; your tracking skills are impeccable. I hadn't even realized you were following me." Zoey breathed out, smiling into those ferocious green eyes. She could see all of the pure hatred that poured out of Dakota's eyes but all that she could do was smile. It wasn't news that Dakota never trusted her and here she was just giving her another reason not to. It was futile to try and convince her otherwise, to try and reason with the fuming raven haired girl before her, so she just smiled, handling the situation the best she could.
"How much did you-"
"How can you call yourself her mate? You're the reason why her pack mates- her family- are dying! You've caused her so much pain and you nearly got her killed!" Dakota shook with rage as the words spewed from her mouth, the entire forest listening while she exploded. Squirrels stopped their dances, owls ceased their hoots. This was the main event. Dakota knew her pack wasn't perfect but it was the only family she had left and to see them killed by a double crossing hunter infuriated her.
"Oh, her family? The ones that plot to kill her after they off their current alpha? I forgot that she meant so much to them. My fault." Zoey shrugged sarcastically, feigning a grimace while she held Dakota's glare.
Dakota's temper had gotten the best of her but she refused to attack. She was just as stuck as Zoey was but her anger was getting the best of her. How could a guest do this to the people that fed her, clothed her and took care of her? She was spitting in their faces with a smile and she didn't feel bad at all. Although Dakota didn't know her motives, she was still a member of the pack and this was enough evidence to have Zoey executed.
"Well, pup, now that you know, what are you gonna do?" Zoey questioned, turning her back on the flustered wolf only to come face to face with a pair of foreign eyes. They were just as murderous as Dakota's but Zoey refused to break. The only leverage she had going for her was her and their connection with Skylar. They wouldn't touch her because they loved Skylar too much. Resting against a dying tree, the leaves blocking out the moonlight, Zoey accepted her defeat but remained silent.
Dakota chuckled, silently thanking her mate for following. She needed some else to hear her confess, to trap her so that she could hang it over her head. Dangle it just out of reach.
"Call them back."
"Yeah, let me just light up the bat signal. They'll come rushing back." Scarlett growled, growing impatient with the girl but Zoey regarded her with uninterested eyes. Deadly tension rose, strong enough to suffocate the entire house that rested yards away from them.
"Call. Them. Back." Dakota demanded
"I. Can't. If you forget, I don't have a phone, so you'll have to wait until tomorrow, pup." Zoey spit, her anger finally catching up to her.
