The Desert Watches

Hana's POV :

The sand stretches farther than my senses can comfortably reach.

That alone is enough to unsettle me.

Heat warps the air, turning the horizon into a trembling illusion. The dunes rise and fall like frozen waves, their curves constantly shifting under the sun's merciless stare. Every grain of sand reflects light, blinding and sharp, as if the desert itself is trying to strip us bare.

We aren't alone.

I feel it before I see it.

Dozens of chakra signatures gather behind us, ahead of us, scattered across the desert like constellations drawn in blood and intent. Some feel familiar—Leaf shinobi, steady and disciplined. Others are sharp and dry, shaped by sand and scarcity.

And then there are the ones that make my skin crawl.

Cold.
Dense.
Wrong.

A Suna instructor steps forward, his presence cutting through the murmurs like a blade.

"First stage of the Chūnin Exams," he announces. "Sand Navigation Trial."

The wind picks up as if responding to his words.

"The rules are simple. Reach the checkpoint beyond the dunes before sunset. No external guidance. No interference from jōnin."

A pause.

"This desert is not controlled."

A ripple of unease passes through the crowd.

"Anything you encounter out there," he continues, eyes narrowing, "is part of the test."

I swallow.

Shisui shifts beside me. "That sounds... comforting."

"It's not," I murmur.

The instructor raises his hand.

"Begin."

The moment my foot touches the sand, I know this place is hostile.

The ground doesn't just shift—it slides, pulling at my legs like a living thing trying to drag me under. Heat seeps through my sandals instantly, and the air tastes dry, brittle.

I close my eyes.

The world unfolds.

Chakra blooms outward from me in every direction, brushing against signatures near and far. Team 8 forms a familiar triangle—Shisui sharp and flickering, Shima steady and warm, healing chakra coiled tight like a promise.

Further out—

Something brushes my senses and recoils.

Not curiosity.

Testing.

I turn my head slightly.

Three figures stand apart from the others, their chakra muted but unnatural, like fog over still water. One of them looks at me.

My chest tightens.

For a heartbeat, the desert vanishes.

I smell iron.

Blood soaking into soil.

A scream that never finished.

I gasp, stumbling forward—

"Hana?" Shima grabs my arm.

I force chakra through my network, snapping the sensation apart. The image shatters like glass.
