Sunagakure Arena
The sand is still scarred from Shisui's battle—burn marks, shallow craters, scattered insect husks—when the proctor steps forward again. The noise in the stands hasn't fully died down, but anticipation coils thick in the air.
"Second match."
A pause.
"Vasa of Kirigakure
versus
a shinobi of Kumogakure."
A ripple of unease passes through the arena.
The Mist kunoichi steps onto the field with measured grace. She is tall and pale, black hair hanging loose down her back, green eyes half-lidded as if bored. No weapon is visible. No hand seals. No obvious killing intent.
And yet—
Several jonin in the stands straighten instinctively.
Something about her feels wrong.
Across from her, the Cloud shinobi rolls his shoulders, lightning-nature chakra crackling faintly under his skin. He smirks, confidence radiating from every movement.
"Tch. A Mist girl?" he scoffs. "Hope you don't disappear before this gets fun."
Vasa doesn't respond.
She only looks at him.
The proctor's arm drops.
"Begin."
The Cloud shinobi explodes forward, chakra surging into his legs as he closes the distance in a blur. His fist draws back, lightning snapping along his forearm—
—and then—
He stops.
Mid-step.
Mid-breath.
The sand crunches softly beneath his frozen foot.
"What—?" His voice cracks.
The arena grows unnaturally quiet.
Vasa hasn't moved.
She hasn't formed a single hand seal.
She simply watched him.
The Cloud shinobi's pupils dilate as his breathing quickens. Sweat beads instantly on his forehead.
"No—no, that's not—" He staggers backward. "Get out of my head!"
The audience begins to murmur.
"What's happening?"
"Is this a genjutsu?"
"But she didn't—"
Inside the illusion, the Cloud shinobi screams.
Not aloud.
Not yet.
His vision twists—sunlight bleeding into shadow, sand turning black and wet beneath his feet. The arena dissolves.
He stands alone on a battlefield littered with corpses wearing Cloud headbands.
Burned. Torn apart. Faces frozen in terror.
Lightning flickers overhead—not his chakra, but something wrong, crawling across the sky like veins.
"No... no, no, no—" He stumbles, clutching his head.
A shape moves behind him.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Breath brushes the back of his neck.
"Don't look," a voice whispers.
His mother's voice.
He turns anyway.
The creature wears her face.
