Eighth Match
The arena falls unnaturally quiet.
Even the wind seems to hesitate.
The proctor's voice is steady, but there is tension beneath it now—everyone can feel it.
"Next match."
A lone figure steps into the sand from the Konoha side.
Karui Uchiha.
Her posture is loose, balanced, dark hair tied back, Sharingan already spinning slowly in her eyes—two tomoe, sharp and alert. She rolls her shoulders once, exhales, and lets the noise of the crowd fade away.
Across the arena, the air changes.
The Kiri shinobi walks forward barefoot, pale skin stark against the sand. Her movements are slow, deliberate, almost lazy—but her chakra leaks like a wound that refuses to close.
Hana feels it before she sees anything.
Her breath catches.
The chakra is wrong.
Not just heavy—corrosive, unstable, pressing against Hana's senses like acid against skin. It churns inside the girl from Kiri, barely contained, scraping against the edges of a seal Hana can feel but not fully perceive.
Ushima.
She stops at her mark, head tilted slightly, lips parted in something that might be a smile—or hunger.
Karui doesn't look away.
The signal drops.
Karui moves first.
She vanishes.
Sand explodes where she stood as Karui reappears behind Ushima, kunai flashing toward the back of her neck—
Ushima twists impossibly fast.
The blade misses by a hair.
Karui is already gone again, her form blurring across the arena, Sharingan tracking every micro-movement, every twitch of muscle.
She's fast, Hana thinks. But Karui is faster.
Karui strikes again—low sweep, high slash, feint into a fire-tag flicked mid-spin.
The explosion forces Ushima back—
—and she laughs.
It's soft. Broken. Delighted.
The sand beneath Karui's feet hisses.
She jumps just as the ground melts.
Not burns—melts.
The sand turns black and viscous, bubbling as a translucent, acidic liquid eats through it.
Karui lands hard, eyes wide now.
Ushima's chakra surges, visible even to non-sensors—sickly, pale green energy bleeding from her skin as she drags her fingers through the air.
Where her hand passes, the sand corrodes.
Karui flips backward, hands flying through seals.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu!"
Flames roar toward Ushima—
They hit the acid mid-air.
The fire dies with a violent hiss, steam screaming upward as the acid devours it.
Karui's pupils tighten.
Ushima lunges.
Her speed is sudden, feral.
