Wings over Dunes

3rd POV
The desert pressed in from all sides.
Heat shimmered off the dunes, distorting distance and depth until even shadows felt unreliable. The wind erased tracks almost as soon as they were made, dragging sand across skin, into armor seams, into mouths and eyes. Every breath tasted dry.

Team 8 moved in disciplined silence.

Hana walked slightly ahead, senses extended in a wide, controlled arc. Chakra signatures bled into one another at this distance—Leaf, Sand, foreign—but patterns still emerged. Movement. Intent. Tension.

Behind her, Shima adjusted her pack again, already irritated by the heat. Shisui ranged farther out, flickering ahead and back, a restless pulse of speed and awareness.

Ahead, three figures waited at the crest of a dune.

Gaara stood motionless at the center, sand curling lazily around his feet like a living thing at rest. Temari leaned on her giant fan, posture casual but eyes sharp. Kankurō hovered nearby, hands near his gear, pretending not to scan the horizon.

Temari was the first to speak.
"Looks like the desert decided to throw us into the same lane."

"Convenient," Shisui replied, stopping a few paces short. His tone was light, but his chakra was tight.

Gaara's pale green eyes settled on Hana.

"The sand ahead has been disturbed," he said calmly. "Repeatedly. Recently."

Hana frowned. "Below the surface?"

"And above it," Gaara added.

The wind shifted.

A shadow passed overhead.

Hana looked up—and her senses screamed.

The creature circled high, wings spanning wider than most summons Hana had studied. Its body was lean and armored, feathers edged like blades, reflecting sunlight in jagged flashes. Its talons were massive, curved inward like hooks, darkened as if burned or corroded. Each wingbeat displaced air violently, kicking up spirals of sand far below.

It cried out.

The sound cut through the desert—sharp, piercing, almost metallic.

Temari clicked her tongue. "That's bad."

"What is it?" Shima asked, already bracing.

Gaara's sand stirred, rising higher around his legs.
"A Kōryū-Tori," he said. "A desert apex predator. Rare. Solitary. Highly territorial."

Kankurō snorted. "Translation: if it spotted us, it already decided one of us is dying."

The creature folded its wings.

And dove.

"Move!" Shisui shouted.

The impact was catastrophic.

The beast slammed into the dune with bone-crushing force, talons ripping trenches through compacted sand. The shockwave threw Hana sideways; she hit the ground hard, breath knocked from her lungs as grit tore across her skin.

The creature's claws snapped shut where Shima had been moments earlier.

Gaara raised his hand.

Sand surged upward instantly, compacting into a hardened wall that met the creature mid-lunge. The impact rang like metal striking stone.

The beast shrieked, wings beating violently, wind howling as it struggled against the sand binding its chest.

"Wind Style: Great Breakthrough!" Temari roared.

The gale hit the creature's left wing head-on. Feathers shredded. Bone cracked.

The Kōryū-Tori screamed—this time in pain—and twisted violently, tearing free of Gaara's hold by sheer brute force. It slammed back into the air, circling lower now, fury sharpening into something deliberate.

Shisui vanished.

A flicker of motion, then—

"Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"

Explosive fireballs slammed into the creature's underbelly. Flames spread across its armored feathers, black smoke curling into the sky.

The beast reeled, losing altitude—

Then corrected.

Its eyes locked onto Gaara.

It dove again.

Gaara's sand rose to meet it—

And stopped.

Hana felt it a split second before it happened.

The sand beneath them shifted.

Not naturally.

Not like wind.

Like something pulling.

"Hana—?" Shisui started.

The ground collapsed.

Gaara sank to his knees as the sand liquefied beneath him. His sand surged automatically to compensate—

And was dragged downward.

A hand burst from the dunes.

Coated in chakra that consumed whatever it touched.

It clamped around Gaara's ankle.

Kankurō shouted. Temari screamed his name.

The figure emerged slowly, deliberately, as if the desert itself were parting for him. Tattered robes clung to a tall, lean frame. His chakra was suffocating—dense, coiled, predatory.

Ancient.

Wrong.

Gaara snarled, sand exploding upward in a crushing wave—

The stranger didn't dodge.

The sand froze mid-motion, then was pulled downward, collapsing inward as if gravity had turned against it.

"You've grown," the man said softly. His voice was calm. Almost fond.
"But not enough."

The ground opened.

Gaara vanished beneath the desert in a roar of collapsing sand.

"HANA!" Shisui lunged forward.

Too late.

The sand sealed itself.

The presence vanished.

The Kōryū-Tori screeched overhead—but its cry sounded distant now, meaningless.

Temari dropped to her knees, tearing at the sand with bare hands.
"Gaara—!"

Hana stood frozen, senses burning outward—

And found nothing.

No chakra.

No trace.

Only a void where Gaara had been.

Far beneath the desert, something moved.

And whatever had taken him—

It had done so effortlessly.
