The sun hangs high above the arena now, heat pressing down like a weight on everyone's shoulders. The air is thick with tension, excitement curdling into unease after the succession of brutal matches.
The proctor steps forward again.
"Next match."
Sixth Match
Tensuji Nara of Konohagakure
vs
Mishima of Kirigakure
A ripple passes through the stands.
Tensuji Nara walks out with hands in his pockets, posture relaxed, eyes half-lidded—but his shadow stretches deliberately across the sand, already measuring distances, angles, escape routes.
Across from him stands the Kiri shinobi.
Mishima.
He looks... ordinary.
Average height. Unremarkable face. Calm, unreadable expression. No visible weapons. No obvious killing intent.
That alone makes Hana uneasy.
From the Konoha section, she narrows her eyes, extending her senses just slightly.
His chakra feels... wrong, she thinks. Like it won't stay still.
The signal is given.
Tensuji moves first—not forward, but sideways, positioning himself carefully as his shadow creeps along the ground.
"Shadow Possession Jutsu—"
The technique activates—
And Mishima raises one hand.
"I yield."
The words fall into the arena like a dropped blade.
Silence.
"...What?" Tensuji blinks, genuine confusion breaking through his lazy mask.
The proctor stiffens. "Do you understand what you're saying, contestant?"
Mishima inclines his head politely. "Perfectly."
His chakra retracts, settling unnaturally still.
Murmurs explode through the stands.
"Did he even try?"
"That was a Nara—why give up?"
"Something's off..."
Tensuji studies him carefully, sharp mind already turning.
"...Troublesome," he mutters.
The proctor hesitates, then raises his arm.
"Winner—Tensuji Nara."
Mishima turns and walks away without another word, passing beneath the Kiri banner, his gaze never once lifting toward the arena.
Seventh Match
Shima Senju of Konohagakure
vs
Kankurō of Sunagakure
The atmosphere changes instantly.
This match draws cheers before either shinobi even steps forward.
Shima enters the arena rolling her shoulders, medical pouch secured at her waist, eyes bright but focused. There's tension in her jaw—this isn't sparring, and she knows it.
Across from her, Kankurō grins beneath his face paint, the massive wrapped bundle strapped to his back shifting slightly.
"Well, well," he drawls. "A healer, huh? Hope you're tougher than you look."
Shima plants her feet. "You'd be surprised how many people say that."
From the stands, Hana leans forward, hands clenched.
You've got this, she thinks fiercely.
The signal drops.
Kankurō moves first.
"Puppet Technique!"
The wrappings explode apart as his puppet bursts free—wooden limbs snapping into place, joints clicking, hidden blades glinting in the sun.
Shima leaps back as senbon fire from the puppet's mouth, embedding into the sand where she stood moments before.
"Poison-tipped," Kankurō says smugly. "One scratch is all it takes."
Shima doesn't answer.
She rushes forward instead.
Kankurō's grin widens. "Bold."
The puppet lunges, arms extending unnaturally, spinning blades screaming toward her—
Shima slides beneath them, chakra flaring into her legs as she drives a fist into the puppet's torso.
CRACK.
The wood splinters—but doesn't break.
"Ha!" Kankurō jerks his fingers, yanking the puppet back. "Medical chakra won't help you against wood!"
Shima skids to a stop, breathing hard, eyes sharp.
"Good thing I didn't use medical chakra."
She vanishes.
Kankurō's eyes widen. "What—?!"
Shima reappears behind the puppet, palm glowing faintly green as she slams it into the puppet's shoulder joint.
Paralysis Technique.
The chakra floods the joint—not healing, but disrupting the flow through the chakra-threaded mechanisms.
The puppet spasms.
"Dammit—!" Kankurō snarls, fighting the resistance as the puppet's movements become sluggish.
Shima presses the advantage.
She charges straight through a spray of senbon, ignoring the shallow cuts as she closes the distance and drives an elbow into the puppet's core, then another precise chakra-infused strike into its leg.
From the stands—
"Shima!" Hana shouts. "Left side—he's rerouting the strings!"
Shima pivots just as a hidden blade snaps toward her throat, narrowly missing.
"Thanks!" she calls back, teeth bared in a fierce grin.
Kankurō clicks his tongue. "Annoying."
He pulls hard, sacrificing finesse for power—the puppet launches forward, tackling Shima and pinning her briefly in the sand.
For a split second, the arena holds its breath.
Then Shima moves.
She plants her feet, muscles screaming, inherited Senju strength surging as she throws the puppet off her, wooden limbs crashing into the ground.
Before Kankurō can recover, she's already there.
Her glowing palm strikes his arm.
Then his shoulder.
Then his chest.
Each hit sends a wave of paralysis chakra through his body.
Kankurō staggers, fingers going numb, chakra strings flickering.
"No—wait—!"
His puppet collapses lifelessly as the connection snaps.
Shima stands over him, chest heaving, eyes blazing.
"Yield," she says firmly. "Before I shut down your nervous system completely."
Kankurō freezes.
Then exhales sharply, lifting his hands. "...I yield."
The proctor's voice cuts through the tension.
"Winner—Shima Senju."
The stands erupt.
Hana lets out a breath she didn't realize she was holding, pride flooding her chest.
Shima looks up toward Team 8, meeting Hana's eyes.
Hana smiles wide and nods.
You were amazing.
