The desert cools quickly after sunset.
By the time night settles over Sunagakure, the sand no longer burns beneath bare feet. Instead, it exhales the day's heat in long, tired breaths, and the lanterns strung across the guest compound flicker like distant stars fallen too low.
Hana stands on the balcony, hands resting on the stone railing, eyes half-closed.
Her senses are still stretched thin.
Even now, chakra signatures drift through the city like currents—guards rotating shifts, patrols doubling along the outer walls, medics moving in quiet urgency. Beneath it all lingers an absence. A hollow space where Gaara's turbulent presence should have been.
She hates that she can feel it.
"You're going to wear a hole through the village if you keep pacing like that."
Shisui's voice is gentle when he speaks, not teasing, not sharp. Just... there.
Hana doesn't turn immediately. "I'm standing still."
"In body," he replies, stepping up beside her. "Your chakra's been circling the entire city for the past ten minutes."
That earns a small, tired huff of a laugh.
"Sorry."
He leans his forearms against the railing too, close enough that their shoulders almost touch—but not quite. He's learned when to give her space. He's also learned when not to.
"The instructors said two days," he says quietly. "Search teams are already out. Rasa won't stop until Gaara's found."
"I know," Hana murmurs. "But whoever took him... they weren't rushing. They planned it. They waited for the exact moment everyone was distracted."
Her fingers curl slightly against the stone. "That kind of patience scares me."
Shisui watches the lantern light reflect in her eyes. "It scares me too."
She finally looks at him then, surprised by the honesty.
"But," he continues, softer, "fear doesn't mean helplessness."
She studies his face—the calm confidence, the steadiness that never feels forced. The way his chakra sits like a quiet flame, unwavering even now.
"The Mist shinobi," Hana says. "They were watching us. Not just our jutsu. Our reactions. Who protects who. Who hesitates."
Shisui nods. "I noticed."
"One of them..." she hesitates, brows knitting. "One of them feels wrong. Like their chakra is tearing itself apart and holding together at the same time."
"That's not something you can fix alone," he says gently.
Her lips part, then close again.
"That's what worries me."
The silence stretches—but it isn't uncomfortable.
Desert wind passes between them, carrying sand and distant voices. Somewhere below, Shima laughs at something Karui says. Life continues, stubbornly.
Shisui shifts, finally letting his shoulder rest against hers.
"You know," he says, voice low, "when I was younger, the elders used to tell me that a true shinobi's strength wasn't in how fast they moved... but in who they stood beside when things went wrong."
She glances at him. "That sounds suspiciously wise for you."
He grins faintly. "Don't tell anyone. I have a reputation."
