Star Mine watched with noticeable excitement as his creation opened his beautiful green eyes. The android boy blinked a couple times due to the bright lights in the room before looking around. When his eyes landed on Mine, he stared at him before the latter gave him a small smile. "Who are you?", the boy asked. "My name is Star Mine. I'm a scientist. Do you know who you are?"

"Yes, my name is Strange Dark."

"I'm going to run a few tests on you, so you'll need to sit up, okay?"

The boy nodded and sat up on the metal table. "Can you hold your hand out towards me?", Mine asked and Dark did exactly as he was told. Mine gently grasped Dark's hand and squeezed it lightly, "Can you feel that?", the green-eyed blonde nodded. Star Mine then reached into his pocket and took out a sewing pin, "I-I'm sorry... but I have to make sure your pain sensors are working correctly....", he said and turned Dark's hand over so that his palm was facing upward. Mine gently gripped Dark's pointer finger and poked the pin into the tip of it. Dark flinched and pulled his hand away, giving Mine a 'why did you do that?' look. "I'm sorry... I won't hurt you again....I promise.", Mine hugged Dark and was happy when the boy hesitantly hugged him back.

They stayed like that for a few moments before Mine backed away, "I've spent six years trying to make you absolutely perfect... and at last I have succeeded. You are so special to me, Dark. Don't ever forget that...", the taller smiled and placed his hand on Dark's cheek, stroking it with his thumb. He watched as Dark placed his pale hand over his own, "I will remember that.", the boy said in a soft voice.

◇■◑THREE YEARS LATER◐■◇

Dark had developed his own personality and now seemed less like an android and more like an actual human. But something was missing... Star Mine felt as if Dark should be able to experience emotions, like humans. And even though his friends who worked in the lab with him said it was a bad idea, he began making the program anyway.

During the second year of the program's development, Mine began to feel oddly weak and decided to go to a doctor. It was then that he was told he had cancer, and that it was so severe, it would be pointless to even begin treatment. His first thought was, 'I need to finish that program... even if it's the last thing I do...'

That night, he stayed up until dawn, despite the doctor's orders telling him to get as much rest as possible, to work on the program. He was so close to actually finishing it. He smiled to himself as he thought of Dark and just how far he had come. He still didn't have much of a response to gifts other than a small smile and saying, 'Thank you'. But Mine knew it was because his system couldn't process the emotions of being happy and truly thankful for said gift.

But all that would change once the new program was finished.

......................

One night while Mine was at the lab, spending time with Dark, the smaller boy noticed his lack of energy. "Are you okay?", he asked as Mine held him in his lap. "I'm fine, Dark... don't worry about me. But there is something I want to tell you."

"What is it?"

"I love you. I know you can't feel the same, but I just wanted you to know that.... just in case."

"...What is 'love'?"

"It's when you really care about someone and want to be with them forever."

"You want to be with me... forever?"

"Yes, I do."

"I want you to be with me forever, too.", Dark said, laying his head on Mine's shoulder. Mine smiled and wrapped his arms around Dark. He was happy just holding the smaller boy and feeling him breathe against his neck. It made him feel like nothing was wrong and that he would actually be able to stay forever.
