Broken Promises||Ao'nung x reader||

Chapter 18

A/N - A LITTLE PSA BEFORE WE BEGIN!!!!! This might be slightly out of character but I wanted to have a small moment between Y/n and Ao'nung and he barely had screentime so bare with me okay?

 "Neteyam! Stop!" You yelled, smacking his hand off of his ear. "Lo'ak is probably fine, just... give him time. Dad would be more mad at Lo'ak than Ao'nung anyways. If he isn't back by sundown, I give you full permission to snag his ear and drag him to dad." You reasoned which made Neteyam let go of his ear and throw him back down.

"Why do you think you can give permission on what happens to Ao'nung?" Neteyam raised his voice. "He is to be MY mate. That means, I am to be Tsahik! You will listen and you will do it with a smile on your face. Do you understand, Neteyam?" You stood in front of Ao'nung, yelling at your brother. "Wow, you warmed up to him fast." Your brother scoffed and turned away. "Neteyam no." You grabbed his arm and made him look at you. "You were the same way with Spider and Lo'ak, they mess up all the time. Remember when Lo'ak and Spider lost Tuk and you said 'Tuk is scrappy, she'll be fine. Give her till sundown and then we'll tell dad.'"

It felt like your reasoning was falling on deaf ears. "That was the forest. We know the forest. We know nothing of this place." He spoke, teeth gritted. "There is nothing different. He's not an idiot like you and dad think. He's smart and scrappy too. He's so smart and you-" "Enough!" Ao'nung yelled. "Just, give this one to her, I'm tired of hearing you screeching at each other." Ao'nung rubbed the middle of his brow bones. Neteyam just grunted and left.

After 15 minutes, you finally spoke up to ease the tension. "So why'd you do it?" "I just wanted to look cool in front of my friends after he beat our a**es..." He said, rubbing his arm with an uncomfortable look on his face. "Why didn't you hit me?" You said, almost out of nowhere. "What?" He asked as he looked around confused. "Earlier. You had me pinned, raised your fist and then just... didn't punch me. And before you say your selfish crap again, just know I don't believe you." You rolled your eyes. "Uh..." He hesitated before speaking. "You're.. Uh.. you wouldn't believe me if I told you anyways, so..." He said as he got up and started walking away which caused you to follow. "Tell me anyway." You said, following after him. You hated to admit you looked like a lost puppy begging for attention. "No." "Please?" "No." was the whole conversation for about 5 minutes until you realized where he was walking.

He wanted to get you back on an Ilu.

Ao'nung grabbed a saddle and put it on an Ilu and you did the same as you rode out and followed him. After 5 minutes, you finally got tired of him telling you no and you saw a nearby cove and you rode into it. Ao'nung, without thinking, followed you into it. "If you're gonna tell me no again, you might as well just leave." You said as you unmounted your Ilu and sat on a small ledge in the cove and he did the same, sitting next to you. It was small, barely an air pocket with a ledge but it was something.

"No." He laughed at the irony of his answer which made you roll your eyes. "Okay, just... tell me, please?" you tried to ask again and he just sighed.

About 3 minutes later he spoke, cutting the tension ever so slightly. "You just... It's.. It's weird, okay? You're weird and we don't work and it's not... We're two different-... UGH!" He growled at his loss for words but you looked at him and his face was a bright magenta color. "Ao'nung, just speak. What are you so worried about?" you asked him and your face dusted a shade of purple that was barely seen. "UGH!" He grumbled again before jumping back into the water, and riding off with an Ilu.

After riding back, you decided to find Neteyam. It was almost sundown and you wanted to apologize. You hopped off your Ilu and called out to your brother. "Neteyam!" You yelled as you ran out of the water up to him on shore. "What Skxwng?" He said, looking away from you. "Okay, that was deserved and I'm sorry. I just... I shouldn't have talked to you that way and I'm really sorry." You said as you sat next to him on the sand. "You should be sorry. I understand you're angry but so am I, dad shouldn't have done that, we both know." He said, finally looking at you.

"Neteyam, I'm so sorry.." You trailed off as you saw Ao'nung swimming around the shallow end of the beach. "Is he-..?" You asked your brother. "He's been doing that for a while, I watched him ride back from somewhere on an Ilu, yell, and then just... swim." He chuckled. You both sat there for a long while. You watched as Neteyam kept lookout for Lo'ak as the sun set. You could see him getting angrier the darker it became and he went into the water and tugged Ao'nung up. "Alright, it's time you tell Toruk Makto what you did." He said as you followed Neteyam to your father.
