Owen had never been in so much pain in his life. His knee was jolting with pain whenever he so much as shifted, and with Kai's father dragging him by his upper arm, he was unable to stay off it. He could walk, he was leaning heavily on the other man for support, despite not wanting to. He didn't dare look at his leg, where the mallet had connected with his knee. He knew he'd see mangled flesh and, most likely, bone fragments.

They were making slow progress down the hall, barely half way to the end when the men Kai's father had ordered to get him came barreling out of the room and slammed the door shut.

Kai's father let out a frustrated yell and waved his gun at them. "What the fuck are you doing?"

"He's gotten free!"

Kai's father swore under his breath and resumed dragging Owen along. He stopped short when a loud bang echoed from inside the room. The wooden cross bar shuddered as something, someone, slammed into the door from the inside.

Owen's heart was hammering in his chest, he was barely able to see through the pain. But if Kai had gotten free, this was their chance. Someone had come for them. It had to be his pack. It had to. He needed it to be his pack.

The door creaked as the metal bowed outward, and Owen heard splintering. The crossbar had split slightly.

"Don't just stand there, get ready to subdue him!"

His mates father sounded crazed, almost panicked. Owen laughed, a sharp, breathless sound that escaped his throat when the door shuddered once more. Kai's father struck him across the head with the butt of his gun.

"Shut up." Kai's father pointed the gun at his temple. "Tell your mate to stand down or you die."

Owen couldn't let himself be used against Kai. Kai would do anything for him, he already had. He needed to get away from his father, so Kai would have a clear path of attack.

His leg was searing with pain, his head was swimming, his vision was blurred. He needed to time his attempt to get free perfectly, or they'd be in a whole world of trouble.

Owen shifted his weight onto his good leg, trying to ignore the amount of pain he was in by controlling his breathing. The door groaned as Kai slammed into it again and again.

His father's grip on his arm tightened when the cross bar splintered and snapped completely, allowing the door to burst open, nearly coming off its hinges completely.

The entire hallway went still when a large, clawed hand covered in fur gripped the edge of the door. Owen was pretty sure one of the men standing in front of it wet himself.

Owen's breath caught when Kai stepped out into the hallway. He was a huge, menacing thing with glowing eyes and dark enough fur that all Owen could make out in the dark hallway was his silhouette and his bared teeth.

One swipe of his arm and the men outside the door were mowed down with razor sharp claws, left groaning on the ground. Kai's breath created clouds in the cool air of the hallway, shrouding the glow of his eyes.

"Holy shit." Kai's father was gripping his arm so tightly he was sure there would be bruises. "What have I done?"

Rather than his tone being that of a man in fear, it was pure delight. He'd created the perfect weapon, Owen realized. A werewolf with a stronger, faster, larger body and one who could be controlled via his mate.

Owen wasn't going to let that happen. It was now or never. "Kai!"

Kai's head snapped to the side, where he and his father were standing. With all the strength Owen had left in his mangled leg, he shifted his weight and brought his other foot down on Kai's father's shoe, so hard he heard bones snap.
