Breaking and Entering

Kim is speechless at my revelation, but after a couple seconds she finds her voice. "W-what?" she stutters, "No, he's – why? How do you know?"

A deep sigh escapes my lips as I sit on the ground. "They showed me his file," I pause for a minute, trying to hold back my tears. "He used to work for them, Kim. Volant's a Hecate agent."

If I could see Kim right now I bet I'd see her eyes go wide and her mouth hit the floor, and I assume I'm right when I hear the shock in her voice.

"Volant? No, it's not possible Erin! He saved us at the house when we were ambushed during our first mission, he helped us take down Hecate agents when they attacked our school, and he was even there with us in the hospital room when the bomb went off! I think he's proven his loyalty to CSIS more times than necessary. Besides," Kim rants, "Volant has been working for CSIS longer than we have, what right do we have to accuse him?"

My head thuds against the wall as I lean back, and I pinch the bridge of my nose as the dreadful headache returns from the interrogation. I would love for Kim to be right, and she very well could be, but I was already wrong once and the repercussion caused dead allies and the capture of the only remaining CSIS agents. Too many things just don't add up with Ryan, and I can't afford to make another mistake, especially one that could be blinded by my feelings.

"He was only there eight months before we arrived, convenient don't you think? And look at his position, it's high enough to be consulted on the most important things but not so high as to be suspected, he even trained us, Kim, it's the perfect position for a mole."

Kim doesn't say anything, seven minutes pass before I hear her sigh. "I just don't want to believe it, Erin. Look at everything he's done for us, everything he's risked, including his own life!"

"Yeah, well, it's not really risking your own life if the company you're fighting is actually the company you're working for," I mutter.

When Kim doesn't respond again I think she just didn't hear me, but then a defeated sigh comes from her cell and I know she's given in. Although this is something I wish she wouldn't have. As much as I don't want to, there is still part of me that wants Kim to be right. I like Ryan, I wanted something more to happen between us, but now I'm not sure. Those feelings are still there, but he betrayed me! Even if he isn't working for Hecate, he did at one point and he lied to me – to everyone – about that, I wonder if Mr. Mann even knew.

"Maybe you're right, Erin. Maybe Volant is the mole. It's probably a better idea to be suspicious of him anyway, if he is the mole he doesn't know we're on to him and if he's not then we are worrying for nothing."

"Yeah," I say, Kim's words striking me, "You've got a point."

With that all conversation ends. I spend the next couple of hours trying to think of ways to escape and testing the strength of the bars. Noticing the upper half of the left most bar is a little loose, I begin to try and loosen it more. If I can shake it enough I could pull it back for me to have just sufficient room to squeeze by.

My anger and frustration begins to grow as I realize I'm not getting anywhere with the bars, but just as another idea comes into my head I hear noises outside the door. Peaking my interest, I edge closer to the bars, but the most I see are frantic footsteps underneath the door.

Apparently Kim notices too, because she says, "Erin, do you see that?"

"Shh," I whisper softly.

Grunting and the sounds of fighting fill the otherwise silent room. Muffled shouting and struggling is clear at first, but after a couple seconds the sound starts to fade, leading me to believe someone is being suffocated or knocked out. My suspicions are confirmed as the door opens revealing Ryan stuffing a rage into his pocket while roughly dragging a guard behind him. Zane, Jade, Jacky, and Bonny are right behind him, Jade and Bonny also dragging a guard.
