The Plan

 [Zack’s POV]

The house is made of dark brown wood, and the woods that surround it provide cover for any prying eyes that could be found. The windows are still intact but have little cracks running ramped over its surface, and the wood surrounding it is dry and cracked. It looks like it came straight from a horror flick.

After doing some research in the parking lot of a nearby grocery store, we uncovered some useful information about the robbers. Although we needed Erin to break it down and read in between the lines for any of it to be of any use, we found out that there are three robbers in on this. We also found the house that they were sharing for university, but Erin used her profiler thing and told us they wouldn’t go back there, and that’s how we discovered this place. The house, if you can call it that, which we are in front of right now.

All nine of us created the plan when we were back in the grocery store parking lot, we split up into four teams, two of them sneaking into the house to get the boy while the other two keep watch to make sure the robbers don’t get tipped off and try to sneak out. After the boy is safe, he will go with one team out of the house while the second team inside goes to get the robbers. Sounds simple enough.

Of course they all thought it was a good idea to let me make the teams. I took into consideration the personalities and which mastered abilities complemented each other and created them. Sophia and Jade, Zane and Kim, Erin and Mel and Bonny, and Jacky and I. I think it works quite well actually.

I duck back behind the bush I’m using for cover and speak into my ear piece, “Mel, are you guys in place?”

“Yeah, Bonny, Erin and I are in front, out of sight, just waiting for the signal,” she says. We decided that they would be the ones going in to get the boy to safety, with Jacky and I. In the meantime, Zane and Kim position themselves to keep look out over the right side and back of the house with Sophia and Jade looking over the left side and front of the house.

I nod my head but instantly feel stupid, realizing that only Jacky can see me right now, “Good, when I give the signal look for the boy, Jacky and I will locate the robbers and immobilize them before going down to help you.”

 “We got it.”

“Awesome,” I say smiling. “Zane, Sophia? Do we have your eyes?”

Zane is the first one to respond, he says, “You sure do big bro! Kim and I are A-Okay!” Most people would think that this is abnormal behaviour. It’s not. This is just Zane, he’s my brother and he sure is the goof ball of the group, even now at a serious time he is excited and still joking around.

“We are in position as well,” Jade says, excitement evident in her voice also.

This is it, everyone is ready. This is what we have been training for, we are ready. So why do I feel so nervous? It’s an odd feeling, not the nervousness, but the combination of excitement and nervousness. My thoughts suddenly drift to Erin, I know they have a dangerous part of this mission, the robbers will be after them once they realize they have the boy. The feeling in the pit of my stomach suddenly grows, and it doesn’t stop until I feel a pang in my chest. My thoughts immediately stop, my heart speeding up, I’m nervous, for her?

“Zack?” Jacky asks from beside me, pulling me out of my thoughts. When I look over at her I see bit of confusion in her eyes.

“Uh,” I pause again, quickly snapping myself out of it. “Right. Okay, move in Mel. Jacky and I are right behind you.” I hear a distant reply from someone before the com unit goes silent, everyone listening in anticipation as our first mission begins. I wait a minute, trying to space out the times we enter the house. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned about this old wood creaking.
