"My name is Spencer and I, uh—" he paused, swallowing against the sudden sensation of his pulse pounding violently against his ribs. His chest tightened as his lips pressed firmly together, fighting back the rising tide of panic threatening to consume him, an overwhelming wave he fiercely resisted after the agonizing, failed attempts to gather the necessary courage to address the multitude seated before him, especially knowing she stood right there among them. "I don't really know what I am."

The admission felt remarkably foolish upon his tongue, a pretense of ignorance in order to avoid uttering the agonizing label of an addict, a word that clung to his identity with relentless permanence. Seven hundred and eighteen days of continuous sobriety stretched behind him, a vast expanse of hard-won time, yet the classification remained the only reality that truly seemed to fit his current state of being.

The collective gathering readily absorbed his faltering vulnerability. "Hi, Spencer."

He offered a modest smile as the murmured greeting washed over the room, the syllables of his name echoing in a continuous wave, guiding his wandering gaze until it landed upon Eleanor, her fingers twisting into the fabric of her clothing in a display of nervousness that perfectly matched his own. She treated these gatherings as an intensely private necessity, viewing them as the single most vital component of her rehabilitation journey, hence why she guarded the vulnerability they demanded from anyone familiar to her outside these walls. He shifted his weight before the sea of expectant faces, finally grasping the insistence on anonymity, realizing firsthand how the magnitude of exposing one's rawest wounds, even to complete strangers, possessed an incredibly paralyzing power.

"It's my first time speaking in front of you." Public speaking routinely triggered a frantic disconnect within his mind, where his thoughts raced dangerously far ahead of his physical ability to articulate them until the entire ordeal faded into a blur of fragmented memory, and today proved absolutely no exception as his jaw locked in stubborn refusal to cooperate.

"I guess—" he started, wincing at the blatant falsehood of the hesitation before quickly correcting his course. "I know I had a problem with, uh, Dilaudid, but... I stopped." The specific name scraped violently against his throat, a reminder of the amber bottles constantly haunting the very edges of his memory, making the actual act of uttering the confession feel vastly more agonizing than simply hoarding the secret inside.

"And I thought that meant it was over."

The naivety of the statement tasted utterly ridiculous the moment it materialized, a stark contradiction to the endless piles of statistical data he possessed regarding the prolonged journey of psychological recovery following such dependencies, though he pushed the analytical compulsion aside as the statistical facts were not something he had to offer in such settings.
