A high-pitched frequency instantly consumed her the exact moment her skull collided brutally against the unforgiving asphalt, followed by the numbness rapidly swallowing every nerve ending in her body as she struggled uselessly to force her muscles upward. The surrounding chaos bled into an agonizing blur before surrendering completely to a suffocating darkness, fading into an unnerving silence where even the physical sensation of her own lungs drawing oxygen ceased to register within her fading consciousness.

The screams arrived in a receding tide, followed by the frantic footsteps that rushed towards her until they simply evaporated into the thickening gray veil of the dust. The grit settled deep within the recesses of her lungs, a dry and suffocating presence that she did not struggle to expel, her body accepting the debris as if it were an unoccupied vessel that no longer possessed the will to push away its new inhabitants. The heat from the fire crawled across her skin, melting the surface just enough to blur the edges of her identity without the mercy of a full burn, until the pain finally arrived, a slow, complaining awakening of every bone, one by one, a cacophony of agony that felt entirely out of place in the painless transition she had expected from the end.

Death was supposed to be a muted stillness, a departure from the piercing, high-pitched ringing that now occupied the entire world, yet here she was, pinned to the reality of a bank vault where no one was supposed to die.

Oh, God. Spencer.

Her mouth surged open in a lung-wrenching cough that emptied her chest of the little air she held, her forearm contorting beneath her as she tried to force her body upward, her fingers clawing at the grit-covered asphalt in a frantic search for a purchase that remained perpetually out of reach. Nothing in the world held her weight until a pair of hands found hers, an effortless pull that surged her upward into the blinding light, her feet wobbling like a newborn's as she looked into Rossi's face. His mouth was moving with an apprehensive speed, his lips forming words that her eyes struggled to track while her ears remained locked in that piercing tone that drowned out the rest of the universe.

"Spencer?" she managed to choke out, the name splintering into another violent episode of coughing that left her throat feeling as though it were being seared from the inside out by an invisible flame. It was hopeless; she could see the urgency in Rossi's expression, the way his brows furrowed with a depth of concern she couldn't translate into sound, and then the paramedics were there, helping him steady her against the rigid surface of the stretcher.

She looked up, her gaze tethered to the uncharacteristically blue expanse of the sky that looked far too peaceful against the billowing clouds of gray, while a light was shoved into her eyes, blinding and intrusive, followed by the gooey pressure of an oxygen tube against her nostrils. A strange beeping began to pierce through the internal fog, a new sound competing with the ringing in her ears as they circled around her and lifted her into the cavernous belly of the ambulance. The voices began to bleed through then, at first barely a murmur beneath the surface, then sharpening into a loud chorus of commands and queries that she couldn't fully process.
