Most of us relish in the sound of children laughing, enjoy hearing the sea crash upon the rocky shore. Even relax as rain pounds upon our roofs. These are sounds I've never known. I am deaf. I also can't speak. Silence is all I've ever known. I didn't even know my blood family nor did I want to. I was an elf from Mirkwood, but before I was even an year old I found myself alone. I had been abandoned by my family. I was unwanted.
As an elf I wasn't perfect. Elves were supposed to be perfect. Thankfully I was taken in. I was raised by the dwarves of Erebor in the blue mountains. Dis Thorin's sister raised me with her two sons. Since that day I was no longer an elf of Mirkwood, I was a dwarf of Erebor.
Chapter one: At Your Service
I was traveling with Fili and Kili towards the Shire. Gandalf had told us to meet him there. For me the ride was silent as I could not hear what my brothers were saying. I was sure they were joking, like they always did. Growing up together we had come up with a language that used our hands so we could talk. I looked down at my horse. We were still a day's ride away from the Shire.
Night was falling. I got the boys' attention and told them it was time to make camp. I dismounted and tied my horse to a tree. Fili and Kili followed suit, tying their horses next to mine. They actually rode ponies, I was about 20 inches taller than the two brothers. I untacked my horse before leaving the boys to build a camp fire. I was going after dinner. An hour later I came back with two rabbits and a squirrel. It wasn't much but I could come up with a stew for us with that. I had also picked some herbs.
The next morning we left before the sun rose. We had to be at the hobbit hole by night fall. "What do you think the hobbit knows?" Kili asked me.
I signed back, "Knowing Gandalf, nothing."
"Do you think he'll come?" Fili asked.
"I don't know," I replied. I swung up onto my horse having packed everything. The boys quickly got on their mounts. We then galloped off into the rising sun. We maintained our fast pace for most of the morning. By late afternoon we had entered the Shire's boarders. We spent the rest of the day looking for the hobbit hole that had a green door with a mark on it. There were several green doors, none bore a mark.
I could feel the agitation that the brothers held. I gave them a look, telling them to be patient. I wondered if the other dwarves would be able to understand my language. I wondered if Thorin had picked up on it, seeing how he had been around all the time when I was growing up. As night fell we found a fence that had two other ponies tied to it. I looked at the door and saw a blue mark. I quickly got the boys' attention. When they saw the mark we tied our ponies to the fence and approached the front door.
I knocked on the door. It soon swung open to reveal a hobbit. All three of us bowed and Kili and Fili made the introductions. I asssumed they also explained that I couldn't hear or speak. That way the poor hobbit wouldn't be confused as to why I seemingly ignored him. I signed to him, "at your service."
"What did she say?" Bilbo asked. I read his lips. Fili and Kili explained.
A/N: The picture above is my OC's horse. And the signing they do is American sign language.
