Chapter 13
We managed to sneak into the town, after nearly being caught at the gate and by the guards once inside. We had come up through the toilet into Bard's house as I had learned our smuggler's name to be. Dwalin was the one to show he was most unpleased. Everyone else didn't like the idea but kept their mouth shut as they had been brought in safely. Now we just had to get dry enough to stay warm on our journey and gather supplies.
Bard brought in a wet, black leather of some kind and set it on the table. He unwrapped it and various heavy metal things that had been turned into make-shift weapons sat on the table. They looked usable to me but the dwarves after picking them threw them back on the table. I smacked Kili on the back of the head as he too threw one back into the pile. "Why not make do with what's been offered and go Thorin? You've made do with less and so have I," Balin said.
I agreed, this man had risked a lot in helping us. I as much as said so to our leader as he noticed the wind lance out the window as dry clothes were passed around by Bard's children. I sat down by the fire, trying to warm myself after being in the icy water. I had lived in the mountains my whole life but it was pretty cold here. I dozed off by the fire only for Kili to wake me when darkness fell. "We're going to go get some weapons then head for the mountain."
I got up to follow my group, thinking that stealing was a bad idea; we had been offered makeshift weapons that would work just fine. But why would a group of dwarves listen to a dragon? I watched them enter the armory and they had me come in with them since I couldn't keep watch with my ears. Morons, I could see and smell. It wasn't long before something went wrong and we were dragged to the center of town.
Of course, there was the largest and grandest house. This must be where the master lived. When the doors opened one very fat man and one very thin man stepped out. Both of them comparable to rats. We were accused of being all sorts of things before Dwalin stepped forward and said something, probably something about Thorin. We were there for several minutes as Thorin promised to rebuild this city by giving them gold from the mountain and Bard also spoke his mind on the matter.
I didn't know if they brought me into this or not, it wasn't my concern. Eventually, the master agreed to help us and a huge feast was held for us and we would be given weapons and shipped off in the morning. It was nice to have a hot meal, with something that we didn't have to hunt and kill first. But it felt wrong to take food from these people who were starving. The master clearly took more than his share.
After a long night of drinking, morning had finally arrived. I felt weak; I had been feeling a little bit off since the fight on the river. I had pulled and arrow head from my side but didn't think anything of it. I felt someone grab my arm, I turned to look and saw my one. I smiled down at him. "You're bleeding Falathiel." I looked at my side and he was right.
"I'm ok Kili," I replied.
"Why are you bleeding? What happened did someone hurt you?" I took a few steps trying to figure out what to tell him and that's when I fell. "Falathiel!" I heard his voice in my head. Before I knew it Oin was next to me with Fili and Thorin.
"Stay here and heal, join us when you're well," Thorin said.
"You plan on entering a mountain with a dragon in it without your own dragon for protection!" I yelled in his head.
"You can't protect us when you're injured. Heal, then join us. Come, my nephews." I growled at him in his head.
"I'll stay with her, my duty lays with the sick," Oin said not moving from my side.
"I'm staying with her uncle," Kili said. "She's my one."
"My place is with my brother," Fili said not moving either. "And my sister." With that, the rest departed and two minutes later we were joined by Bofur who had had way to much drink last night. I could think of only one place to go, Bard. I needed Kingsfoil.
We arrived back on the bargeman's doorstep and he was about to turn us away, I could barely walk or stand, my brothers supporting me. "Please Bard," I said pushing my voice into his head as Bofur made the same plea. He let us in as Oin was asking for herbs. "Kingsfoil," I pushed into the healer's head.
He asked for it and Bard said it was fed to the pigs. Bofur told me not to move and ran out the door. Where the in name of Durin was I going to go? It was nightfall before Bofur had made it back and orcs had attacked Bard's home and Legolas and the red-haired elf stood in the home. She ran out and Legolas stayed and healed me.
Kili's POV
"Why did you heal her?" I asked the blonde haired elf.
"She will save us all. If she dies, we all do," he replied leaving to catch up with his friend. That was odd. What did he mean she would save us all? Who was she? What part did she play in all of this? A few minutes later she was up and moving as the whole ground shook. Smaug was awake.
She ushered everyone into a boat, Bard's kids, us. She started moving it to the far shore as the dragon came down on us. I yelled as Bard hit his mark. "It won't pierce his hide," she said her voice appearing in all of our heads I think. "Kili, get everyone ashore. I must fight him." She leapt out of the boat and so did Bain, Bard's son. We couldn't stop him. "Leave him," she ordered. She ran to the edge of a walkway and jumped taking on her dragon form and she was larger than Smaug.
She rammed into him taking him by surprise. Her silver form glinted in the moonlight. She grabbed on to his wing and pulled causing him to scream in pain. He swung his tail at her but missed. I had to stop watching as I directed the boat.
