Chapter 6 Ambush

The man on the sled was the brown wizard, Gandalf's cousin. The two of them left to talk privately. I was left with the rest of the company and I felt uneasy, as though we were being watched. I alerted Fili and Kili so they could tell the others to be on the alert. I kept pacing, trying to survey the whole area. I kept getting a whiff of something foul, like death. It was the scent wargs carried on them like fleas.

As the scent drew nearer I slipped away sensing the slight growl of a beast draw closer and feeling footfalls pad closer to my company. I saw one warg which I quickly killed and it slid down the hill. Another came up behind me and I drove my blade into its head without even turning around. It slid down the hill to land behind Thorin. I came back down the hill wiping my blade clean.

We were being hunted. I rounded the dwarves up after Gandalf had finished yelling at Thorin. The brown wizard took off in one direction and we went in the other. I herded the dwarves, keeping them from being seen by the orcs. Ori almost ran out past a boulder but I grabbed him and pulled him back just as the orcs and wargs passed. Gandalf led us to a lone rock in the middle of a plain.

Gandalf disappeared in front of it just as we were surrounded. I saw Thorin draw his sword as Kili loaded his bow and I loaded mine. I fired an arrow into the eye of a warg. I quickly fired another arrow into the chest of an orc. I sensed Gandalf behind me and the dwarves started to move. Kili looked behind him as though someone had yelled. He started to run and I followed him. He slid down into a hole in the ground that Thorin stood above. Thorin stuck an orc before going down the hole himself.

I felt something approaching me and turned to see a warg. Its teeth wrapped around my waist. I brought the hilt of my sword into the nose of the warg, it released me. As soon as I hit the ground I ran for the opening, sliding down it just as horses appeared on scene. I landed hard on my side as my world went black.

Kili's POV

I went down the hole that the others had gone down. My uncle followed but Falathiel did not. "Thorin, where's Falathiel?" I asked.

"She's on her own," my uncle replied.

I became furious. "She has been protecting us! She told us about the orcs that were hunting us, that were watching us, she saved us from the trolls, and you just left her?!" I then heard the sickening crunch of teeth through bone and flesh. "Falathiel!" I screamed even though she couldn't hear me. I was falling for my sister. She was my one. Moments later her limp form fell to the ground at my feet. I bent down and shook her, trying to get her to look at me. She looked at me before closing her eyes and not responding further.

I picked her up and carried her through the ravine. I hoped we would be able to get her help. I needed her.
