Aiden

"Shhh. Stop crying, Gemma!"

I swam towards my parents' room as I heard my baby sister wailing. I opened the door a little and saw my dad looking like he wanted to rip his hair out as he rocked Gemma in his arms. She was wailing and her red face was shocking against her white hair and black tail. Georgia started to whimper from her crib and my mother started to wake up. When Gemma let out a deafening squeal, I winced and my mom shot up straight looking around for danger. Her eyes were a glowing green and her hair was changing colors as she searched the room. When she realized that everything was fine, she sighed and changed back to her normal look. She got up quickly and took Gemma as my dad went to Georgia. Immediately, Gemma stopped crying and Georgia quieted down as Dad scooped her up. She had a bit more white hair on her head than her twin but had the same startling white tail as our mother.

"Are you just going to stand there and stare at us Aiden?"

I jumped and my dad looked at the door. I turned red and slipped into their room.

"Sorry mom."

She smiled and kissed my head as she came closer to me. "You didn't do anything wrong, sweetheart. I'm sorry that the girls woke you up."

I was about to speak when the door opened and my brother Miles came in. He was only a year younger than me at seventeen and we both had inherited our father's hair and our mother's green eyes. Like our father, we never really cut our hair unless mom made us. It was kept in shaggy mops on our head and she would always play with it whenever she could. While my tail was black with white spots, Miles had a white tail with black spots. The twins were only three months old and had inherited our father's blue green eyes and our mother's white hair. Whenever we were out of the water, their hair would turn brown but underwater it was white.

Miles rubbed at his eyes and glared sleepily at the girls. "Why aren't they shutting up?"

I shook my head and smacked his. "Quit being a jerk."

He glared and punched my arm. Which was met with a punch in the chest. Before he could hit me back, we were both smacked in the head by our father.

"Stop it, you two," he scolded.

We both bowed our heads in respect and mom sighed. When they were sure that the girls were asleep, they set them back in their cribs. Dad gave us each a hug and mom kissed our cheeks before ruffling our hair and sending us back to bed. Miles and I went back to our rooms where we smiled and bid each other goodnight.

I woke up that morning to screaming. I rushed to my parents' room and saw Miles with Gemma. I shook my head and took her from him, grinning at her as she stopped crying and curled up against my chest. He smiled and picked up Georgia, who stopped her crying to grip his thumb, just as dad was starting to stir in his sleep. We both swam out of their room and took the girls to the kitchen. The workers waved at us and one of the mermaids brought us two bottles of milk. We thanked them and left to go to the gardens. A variety of fish were swimming around. The guards were swimming back and forth at their posts with their large spears while some farmers were carrying baskets and carts of their produce. We sat with our sisters by a patch of leather anemones and fed them their bottles.

Gemma looked up at me when she finished and I grinned as she smiled. Her little cheeks were rosy and her tiny hands fisted against her chest. Her eyes followed around several different colorful fish and a few of the dolphins that swam close to us. Miles was laughing as Georgia tried to grab a dolphin that swam up to her. Gemma squealed and lifted her little hands up to my face. Just as I lifted her up, a pair of hands covered my eyes. I felt soft lips by my ear and smiled, carefully holding Gemma to my chest.
