Chapter 8

Knox's POV

I heard voices; one deep, the other light and sweet. I was sleeping in the front of the bus with Scott. Sleeping in an upright chair was really uncomfortable, but I did it. I don't even know why I gave up my bed. None of the other guys volunteered. Why should I? But then I thought about Ginny looking dead on her feet. I realized that giving up my bed was the chivalrous thing to do. I heard the voices again, this time louder.

I looked over at Scott, who has been our tour bus driver since the beginning. He was an old, fat man that never hesitated to use a swear word or two. He wasn't really like a father figure to us, more like a cool uncle that let you do anything you want. In fact, my sister even calls him Uncle Scott on the rare occasions that I get to see my family while on tour. Scott was sleeping soundly, snoring like only a fat man can. I decided to check the voices out.

I got up slowly from the chair, stretching out my back. Once I felt good and loose again, I crept towards the kitchen where the voices were coming from.

"Knox is one of the greatest guys I've ever known. If anyone deserves your trust it's him" a voice I immediately recognized as Evander's said. He went on, "He hasn't had a girlfriend since I first met him, way back in our school days. He doesn't trust himself to get close to a girl because he doesn't want to get hurt. All he needs is girl who is capable of loving him as much as he is capable of loving her. And who could blame him? I think that's what all guys want secretly."

What? Who's he talking to?

"Even a jerk like you?" I was astounded to hear Ginny's voice. Evander and Ginny were talking about me?

"Especially a jerk like me" Evander said, taking me by surprise. I guess Evander does have a soft spot somewhere deep, deep down beneath his indifferent exterior. Who would've thought?

I was smiling too much to realize that my foot was caught on the edge of the sliding door that divided the front of the bus from the kitchen. I tried to get it loose, but I just ended up shutting the door on my toe. I let out a cry of pain.

"What was that?" asked Ginny, suddenly sounding a bit frightened. I guess she had heard my painful cry.

"I don't know. I'll see what it is" Evander said, his shuffling footsteps coming closer. When he opened the door, I reached my hand out and grabbed his hair, pulling him in the front with me before shutting the door.

"Evander?" I heard Ginny's muffled voice.

"Why were you talking about me?" I asked, whispering so Ginny wouldn't hear.

"I have no idea what you are talking about" Evander replied, strait-faced.

"If I recall, you were telling Ginny to trust me or something" I said.

"I don't remember saying that" he said smugly.

"I heard you" I said, now whisper-yelling.

"Look, she has trust issues, okay? She didn't want me to tell you, and I told her that you definitely deserved your trust" Evander retorted, crossing his arms.

"Why does she have trust issues?" I asked, astonished at the news. I've never met anyone who had issues like that, so I was shocked.

"I don't know. Something about a bad experience with an ex-boyfriend" he told me with a shrug of his shoulders. I was instantly angry. What did this guy do to her to make her not trust people? It must've been pretty bad if she couldn't tell me. I mean, why would she tell Evander right away, but I didn't have any clue at all?

Maybe I looked like her ex. I should dye my hair. I've never liked my blonde hair that much, anyway. It made me look too much like my dad.

"Oh" I said smartly.

"Hey, but I made her promise me to give you a chance. Since, you know, you haven't had a girlfriend since I met you" he smirked.

"Why did you tell her that? Now, she probably thinks I'm some loser who can't get a date" I replied bitterly.

"Somehow, I don't think she's one to hold a thing like that against someone" he said reassuringly. I smiled.

"I hope so."

"You've got it bad, huh?" came Scott's voice. We looked over to seem him giving us a knowing look. Evander laughed, and I grimaced.

"Oh, he is so whipped, already" Evander said, still laughing.

I didn't argue because I knew it was true.
