THUNDER SLAPPED THE BRUISED skies as the Dawn Treader tottered through an unrelenting tempest. The wooden panels strained against the sailors' galls as they knotted their ropes and steeled themselves. It took three additional sets of hands to help Hope and Drinian steady the helm. But the journey was growing longer, the cyclone was thickening. It'd been two weeks since they'd taken the advice of some hermit in a gown that called himself a wizard, and there was no sighting of the lost lords or their swords. At this rate, they wouldn't touch land again.

"THREE SPOKES TO STARBOARD!" Hope commanded, struggling to squint through the rain and her whipping hairs. The roaring tides kept challenging her center of gravity. Most of the time, it won.

"AYE, AYE, CAPTAIN!" shouted the Narnians pulling the wheel with her.

Around them, the crew moved swiftly, emptying pails of collecting water and tugging the sails. Feet slipped, lightning thwacked closer and closer. Every so often, someone grumbled something about giving up and letting the sea or some kind of sea creature swallow them whole. But, like the storm, they kept getting back up. The question was, how long could they continue in these conditions, without food or water or land or lords in reach?

"COME ON," Hope urged. "PUT YOUR BACKS INTO IT!"

  "YES, CAPTAIN!"

"ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T WANT TO SURRENDER THE HELM TO ME, CAPTAIN?" Drinian called. "THIS IS NO FAIR BATTLE FOR A YOUNG QUEEN. SAVE YOUR STRENGTH."

"SAVE YOUR PRETTY WORDS FOR YOUR WIFE, DRINIAN!" Hope rasped. "ANOTHER SPOKE TO STARBOARD!"

"AYE, CAPTAIN!" the crew chorused, albeit less enthusiastically than before.

Everyone was finally as miserable as Eustace was.

Well, to be fair, Reepicheep was still singing to his heart's content. So, everyone but the damn rat.

Hope was the last one to retire to the Stern Cabin once the waves tired themselves out for a pinch of time. And let it be known, the only reason she left the helm was because Edmund had to physically pry her from it. She simply hadn't thought it was fair that they get to sit semi-comfortably and dry while the rest of the crew labored diligently to keep them afloat. The Bright and the Just bickered about it for so long, he practically had to carry her inside himself.

Actually, there was nothing "practical" about it. Edmund literally lifted her and dragged her inside.

It was impeccable timing because her adrenaline was certainly wearing thin.
