Chapter Six: The Difference between Hazel and Gray
"Try to shake your foot," Evan encouraged. "You should feel better."
Samantha peered at her numb foot. The pain it had inflicted was unimaginable and it scared her. She didn't want to risk it.
Then she made a mistake.
She looked at Evan, who had a hopeful expression on his face. He looked exhausted with his droopy eyelids and guilt kicked Samantha right in the stomach. It wasn't even Evan's fault that she got hurt and he certainly didn't need to insist staying by her side.
Samantha lifted her foot. And she felt perfectly fine. "Thank you Evan," she said, her head lowered. She couldn't bear looking at him.
"Good," Evan let out a relieved breath. He held Samantha's arm. "Do you think you are able to walk?"
Samantha nodded meekly and carefully released herself from Evan. "Yeah, it's totally fine," she laughed, praying that the tension would go away. "I don't think you are though."
Evan smiled half-heartedly. "Ward is waiting for us," he gave Samantha a gentle nudge. "It's important."
"Just remember," Samantha raised her voice and smirked. "The reason why I agreed to talk to him is just because of your kindness."
Evan smirked back, his blue eyes twinkling. "I like your way of thinking."
"Evan and Kerrigan, YOU BETTER COME DOWN AT ONCE!"
Samantha ran to the living room and stood right in front of Ward, who was seated into a chair and currently scowling. "You sound like a petty girl," she huffed. "What got your knickers in a twist?"
"Samantha," Ward seethed through his tightly clenched teeth. "Please, you and Evan," he motioned at the black couch, "Sit."
"I'm not a dog," Samantha grumbled as she reluctantly obeyed Ward's orders.
"I thought you are a bitch. Aren't you?"
A tall, slender woman said, her arms folded on the top of Ward's chair. Her long raven locks fell glossily to her waist and for a second, Samantha was jealous of her tan skin, which made her conscious of the faint freckles splattered on her cheeks. But then Samantha snapped out of her envy when the woman's statement echoed in her mind.
"Hello, Senpai," said Samantha with a curt nod.
The black-haired woman's eyebrows knitted in confusion. "Do I know you," she asked politely, but her dripping disdain was ruining her serene facade. "From somewhere?"
Samantha flicked her tongue inside her mouth. "Well, you're certainly my senior," she grinned. "In aspects of bitchiness."
The girl froze but in a flash, a crooked smile graced her dark lips. Her gray eyes showed no sign of displeasure or rage. She sauntered towards Samantha confidently. "Samantha Kerrigan," she stated, her perfectly trimmed eyebrows rising. The smile was still attached to her exotic-looking face. "Nice to meet you." She reached out a hand.
Samantha hesitated. This beautiful woman appeared from nowhere and she had no useful information about her. She didn't know what to do. Plus, this person creepily reminded her of something that she couldn't decipher. She helplessly sneaked peeks at the two men. Evan just gestured her to go on whilst Ward was clearly focused on something else. She let out a quiet sigh and nodded, carefully grasping the stretched hand.
Cold. Samantha felt her fingers go numb. Her eyes widened. Her mouth was slightly open but no sound came out. She could do nothing other than
"Oh, silly me," giggled the black-haired woman. She lowered his gaze onto Samantha's hand, which jolted from the unexpected sensation. "I forgot to introduce myself," she said. She flipped her luscious dark mane with a free hand and met Samantha's bewildered mahogany eyes with her own pair. "My name is Rae."
Rae, Rae, Rae...Samantha pondered. Why did that name seem so familiar?
She looked at the woman standing in front of her. The low, almost seductive voice, the tall nose, the curvy lips...Samantha witnessed them before. But where?
Shyly, Samantha stared straight into Rae's almond eyes and she made a conclusion.
"Rachel Wilson?" Samantha asked, stunned. Yes, it was Rachel Wilson for sure! The only thing that differed Rachel Wilson and Rae was their eye color. Rachel's eyes were hazel, and not powered with heavy eyeshadow like Rae's ones were currently.
"Rachel Wilson? I'm afraid you must be mistaken," said Rae calmly, veiled by a thin layer of surprise.
"But...but!" Samantha sputtered. Her stare went frantic, darting every corner of the room. "No," she muttered, stepping away shakily. "You look just like her. No, it can't be."
"Samantha," Ward began as he rose from his chair. He grabbed Samantha by the shoulders---again. "You need to calm down," his face was full of disapprovement. "Do not blindly accuse someone of something you're not definite about."
"I am positive about this!" Samantha exclaimed. "She looks just like Wilson and come on," she moved her hands wildly. "Even their names are similar."
"So?" Ward scoffed. "There are lots of names which share the same structure." He chuckled in disbelief.
"No," Samantha whispered. "Evan," she looked at Evan, who was still sitting on the couch. "Do you trust me?"
Evan said nothing. He skillfully avoided Samantha's pleading, his blue eyes clouded with something heavy.
"Cut it out, Kerrigan," Ward snapped. "We're here to help each other, not wasting my team's time." He stood between Rae and Samantha, his glare pointed. "Return to your seats."
Samantha felt frustrated tears pooling in her eyes, threatening to let loose at any second. She swallowed and forced herself to sit beside Evan.
To be honest, the difference between hazel and gray wasn't a big deal. But the evil glint in both Rachel Wilson and Rae's orbs was just as malicious.
A/N: Freya Tingley as Rae. Rachel is the girl whom Jon cheated on Samantha with, remember? Rae was also mentioned in a chapter too. But I'm not gonna tell you which :-) lol.
