Sara woke up to a warm, unknown room. She had gotten used to sleeping in the green room and when something moved to her right she freaked. Quickly scrambling to get away from whatever was moving she dashed up the stairs and into the green room. Footfalls were heard outside of the door.
“Sara? Are you alright?” but she wasn’t once her butt hit the bed she was up in a flash and heading to the bathroom. Someone was rubbing at her back as she hurled her breakfast up. “Nothing bad looks like she just upset her stomach.”
“Good.” Jumping slightly when she heard Justin’s voice she let Mary lead her back to the bed, keeping her head down so she didn’t have to see anyone’s faces. Betty offered her a warm cup of coffee after she was settled back against the headboard.
“All men out! We want to have a small chat with Sara.” The Luna spoke, pushing both men out into the halls. “Now, tell me why you think you don’t have a mate.”
Sipping the warm liquid she started, “W-when I was little my mother d-died protecting me from a r-rouge attack. She u-used to tell me s-stories of how she and m-my father met. B-but after she d-died-.” A small sob tore from her throat.
Come on Sara, you can do it. A small voice in the back of her head whispered. “After she d-died I was told I-I didn’t have one. I watched a-as the people I once called f-friends find their m-mates but mine never came. So I knew it was t-true. I didn’t have a m-mate.”
Didn’t that feel better, little one? Mentally smiling at her wolf she took another sip of coffee, waiting to see what the women said. “Honey…how you stayed with them for so long I will never know.” Mary said, stirring her drink, “But trust me when I say you have a mate.”
“I used to think the same.” Betty butted in, “My father was…well he was insane. I though that all women went through what I did until I met Tom.” Her eyes took on a dreamy look, “He was so gentle with me, never made any sudden moves or raised his voice around me.”
Mary chuckled, “Mark was the same way when I came to his pack. He had just stepped into the duty of Alpha and I was a passing rouge at the time. My old pack had cast me out into the cold winter while I was near death. He rescued me, let me recover and then slowly wormed his way into my trust and my heart.”
“Men always seem to be able to do that!” Betty joked. “Sara, if Justin thinks you’re his mate you just might be. Try not to push him away too much.” Staring wide-eyed at the two women Sara couldn’t think of a reply.
They knew what she had gone through? But then why-how did they get over their fears? She could feel the tears threatening to show so she tried to lock everything away. No, don’t do that.
Why? She wondered.
Because if you lock it away how can our mate help us? Reasoned her wolf
But you bit him! Sara argued.
Her wolf chuckled, And he tastes very good. Let him try to help you, Sara
I don’t know…j-just let me be for now. She whispered back. When she felt her wolf settle down Sara looked up to see the beta enter with the two alphas on his tail. “Joe wants to give you a check up.” He murmured softly to Betty.
“Already?”
“You’re having twins my little bird. It is a cause for worry.” He helped her to her feet before bowing to Justin, “We’ll be back soon.”
The alpha just nodded, leaning against the wall with his father.

As he stood by the door, watching his mate stutter out words to his mother he couldn’t help but feel jealous. Why couldn’t she at least talk to him like that? It would be something to soothe the savage beast within him.
You will allow our mate to heal before we do anything. His wolf, Delo, growled, She is hurt and scared and it is our job to heal her.
But how can we heal her if she keeps shying away from us? He questioned.
You will see in time pup. And then he was alone. Delo was an old soul, someone that had been around the block a few times. He had chosen to be Justin’s wolf after he saw the young boy face down a bear to save his elder brother.
It had been a stupid reaction but a brave one nonetheless and it had earned the young alpha Delo’s respect for a few lives over. Hearing his mother call his name Justin looked up to see his mate staring at him sleepily, “Why don’t you go make her something to eat while me and Mark get going? The trip home is a long one.”
“Sure.” Following the two elder wolves out to the front door he was stopped when his father hugged him.
“Give her something, like a stuffed animal. If she takes it and starts to sleep with it you’ve got a good chance to become closer to her sooner.” Smiling and nodding he made a mental note to go out and get a present for Sara soon. Once his parents were driving away he headed into the kitchen only to see his mate up already fixing something.
“Shouldn’t you be resting?” he asked, blocking her exit. She whirled around, eyes wide with fear. “Easy now, you need all the rest you can get little one.” She scuffled her feet and looked at the pan, “You can finish if you like but I won’t be leaving you alone in here.”
Sara nodded but went back to her cooking while keeping an eye on him, “So where did you learn to cook?”
“M-my mother.”
“Was she a good cook?” A small smile drifted across her face.
“Yes…a wonderful one.” Grinning ear to ear when he didn’t hear a stutter in her words he decided to push a bit.
“Can you tell me about her and I’ll tell you about my mother?” Sara bit her bottom lip and glanced at him, “If you don’t want to talk then once you go back to the room I’ll leave you alone.”
“I-it would be n-nice to know more about y-your mother.” Bowing deeply he entered the kitchen slowly to pull out the dinning ware.
“Then we will dine in the living room.” After setting up the coffee table so they could eat comfortably he went back in to see what she was actually cooking. “You know that smells great. What is it?”
“M-my mother’s secret recipe for s-steak and homemade f-fries. They have a s-special seasoning for them.” Justin hummed thoughtfully and continued to watch her until she was done.
“Here, let me carry it while you get the pitcher of tea from the fridge.” Sara scrambled out of his way when he neared but he tried not to show how hurt he was by the action. Hell he was just glad she was willing to eat with him in the same room!
It is progress. His wolf murmured, her wolf almost begged her to join you.
You have spoken to her other half?
Oh yes, quite often actually. She is a very intelligent beast, much like myself but more hyper. She is slowly trying to get Sara to open up. The note of happiness is his voice made Justin smile.
Let’s just hope we can get her to stop that stuttering first. Breaking the conversation off and turning to face Sara he smiled and waited until she had seated herself before sitting down on one of the large pillows. “So, tell me what your mother liked to do as a hobby.”
