While Su Su's world narrowed around the hidden valley, Qing Qiu's widened beneath pressure it could no longer politely ignore.
For years, the Scorpion Prince's pursuit of a marriage alliance with Bai Feng Jui had moved like water wearing down stone. He did not demand. He did not threaten. He did not embarrass the Fox Emperor by making his intentions crude or impossible to refuse. Instead, he sent messages wrapped in courtesy, gifts selected with enough care to be inconvenient, and formal requests phrased so impeccably that rejecting them outright would have seemed needlessly hostile.
It irritated Bai Feng Jui almost beyond endurance.
"I can still pretend to be ill," she said.
Bai Zhen, seated across from her in the inner pavilion of Qing Qiu, did not look sympathetic.
"You used that excuse last month."
"I could become ill again."
"Of the exact same vague condition?"
"I am committed to consistency."
"You are committed to avoidance."
Feng Jui slumped back against the carved wooden chair and glared at the ceiling beams. Morning light filtered through gauze curtains, falling across polished floors and trays of untouched fruit. Outside, peach blossoms drifted on the breeze, obnoxiously beautiful, as though the entire fox realm had decided to mock her.
"He wants something," she said.
Bai Zhen's expression shifted slightly.
Only slightly.
But Feng Jui saw it.
She always did.
"He wants an alliance," he replied.
"No," she said at once. "That is what he is asking for. It is not what he wants."
Her uncle looked at her for a long moment, and for once he did not tease.
"What makes you say that?"
Feng Jui sat forward, irritation sharpening into focus. "Because he asks questions like someone who already knows half the answer. Because every gift he sends says more about what he has learned than what he supposedly admires. Because no prince from the Shadow Demon Land pursues Qing Qiu with this much patience unless patience itself is part of the plan."
Bai Zhen's silence confirmed that he had considered the same.
She narrowed her eyes.
"You know something."
"I know many things."
"That answer only works on people who respect evasions."
"Then I am doomed."
"Uncle."
Bai Zhen sighed and looked toward the open doors, where the gardens shimmered in the late morning light.
"The Scorpion Kingdom is moving carefully. Too carefully. They have not threatened our borders, not openly. They have not broken any accords. But their scouts have been seen near mortal thresholds, and their envoys have asked questions in places where questions should not be asked."
Feng Jui's expression tightened.
"Questions about what?"
Bai Zhen did not answer quickly enough.
That was answer enough.
Her irritation vanished.
"Who?" she asked softly.
