What you don’t know, Wont kill you. I think…
Chapter 13
“My father?”
“Yes, Nia, if you insist on hearing the story, don’t interrupt.” He didn’t say it rudely, he seemed like he was anxious to get this story over with. My eyes urged him to continue, although my mind knew that when he did, it was only going to get worse.
“Around a hundred years ago, there was a very strong man named Xavier. I’m assuming you know – somewhat – of what I am and among us, there are very few rulers. Yes Kings and Queens have a specific province, or city that they rule, but a ruler is defined as a being who rules over an entire species, well to us anyway. The humans have greatly misconstrued the meaning of this word—however that is not relevant.”
I noticed how he spat the word human as if it burned his lips to think of the foul creatures. It made me realize how inhuman he really is. This fact scared me.
“Xavier quietly rallied followers, his army strengthening by the week so anyone who was inclined to stop him wouldn’t be able to nonetheless. He was merciless.” He shivered at the memory of –no doubt-- some war I did not know about. “In no time at all, we had a new ruler over us all, dictating us all, power hungry and insane… He slaughtered all those who merely stood on his road to total power.
“Before he was able to claim complete strength a man named Lero attempted to pose a fight, stop Xavier from gaining any more power. Lero was very strong himself. He possessed much strength we believe to be almost magical. I know It sounds odd, but there was no other way to describe this seemingly worthless man who sacrificed his very life, alone, for a mere chance that he may be able to stop this raging bloodshed.
“Times were so grave at this point, no one bothered join him. Everyone knew that his quest was for nothing, and they assumed that he would be unsuccessful. What they didn’t count on however, was the fact that Lero was the strongest individual of our kind in existence. To this day no one has ever even come close to the kind of spiritual strength he held. It is a mystery today how to obtain that amount of strength let alone how to keep it under control in ones body. That kind of power usually eats a person from the inside out, their own greed and thirst for more power overruling every other moral and rational thought in their body.”
This time, we both shuddered in pure horror.
“Lero challenged Xavier to a sort of ‘duel’ the terms being that if he won, well if Lero didn’t win, he wouldn’t be around to see the damage of more destruction. If Lero won, that would be the end of Xavier.
“Xavier was intrigued by Lero who had shown much strength already by getting this far. Xavier’s castle where he burrowed himself was laden with the cruelest guards and most deathly traps. Only a true sorcerer would have any hope of passing through, which is exactly what Lero did. He beat every single challenge in his way, striding into the very throne room of Xavier, and challenging him to this duel.
“How could Xavier not agree? Firstly, he would seem weak to the people that feared him thus making them not follow him as effortlessly, and second, if he won this battle –of course he thought he would in fact win—then all of Lero’s power would flow into him. This was his chance to gain the ultimate weapon, sealing his title as the ever-powerful ruler.
“The duel, well war, began soon after lasting nearly a decade. To us, time is not exactly the same as it is for you humans. We age on a different time frame then known to anyone so they did not become as weary as a weak human would after a day of battle. They were able to last nearly that entire decade without fail. However, these two men were the strongest ever known to our kind, which is the only way they were able to last so long.
