"Okay, I only have a few minutes before your parents turn up, so I need to say this now." I sit beside Will and clasp his hand with both of mine.
He's been in a coma for weeks. His parents constantly harass me, watching me like they think I'm going to steal all of Will's money and run off if they look away for more than a second. I never get any time alone with him.
"I love you Will. I really, really love you. I know your parents hate me... But don't care. Well, I kind of care." I shrug. "I mean, they're your parents. I hate that they don't approve of me, because I want to make you happy..." I sigh. "I guess putting you in hospital isn't the way to make you happy." I laugh nervously, then frown at myself. "I'm not very good at this."
Will's parents walk in and I fall silent.
"What are doing?" His dad asks.
"Talking."
"Why did you fall silent?"
"He's obviously bad-mouthing us." His mother glares at me as they take seats on the other side of Will. They start to talk to him about politics, which I doubt Will will care about. I rub my thumb across the back of his hand, staying silent.
After a while, a doctor tells us that visiting hours are over. I get to my feet at the same time as Will's parents and kiss his forehead.
"Honestly, don't kiss in front of us!" Will's mother complains.
"I only kissed his forehead." I shrug.
"Yes, but..." She looks at me with disgust. "I can't believe William would ever like you."
