"roadtrip? sure." calum said.

"10 minutes, i'll be there." i said eager grabbing some jeans and a couple of t-shirts.

i threw them in a duffle bag, packed my computer, some money, and my phone and i was off.

i walked to his house in a couple of minutes and he was walking out of the front door to his car with a bag.

i hopped in the front seat and he started his engine.

"so, where are we going?" he asked pulling out of his driveway.

"7329 bridgeview lane, sierra iowa." i said pulling it up on my phone's map.

i saw the map, amazed at how long this drive was going to be.

"it's 8 hours and 30 minutes away." i said showing him the map.
-
most of the way so far was straight down the highway. i looked at my phone again, 3 hours away.

"are you hungry or anything? we should get something once we get off of this highway." calum stated keeping his eyes on the road.

"yeah that's fine."

i slept some of the way here, still tired over this thing with my mom.

"turn right in 0.3 miles." my phone said.

calum veered off into the winding road that led to a less busy one.

"turn right." it said again.

we went down a road that you could tell was the more public area.

"what do you want to eat?" calum asked readjusting his grip on my hand.

"i don't care i just want food." i said resting my head on his shoulder.

we came across a McDonalds almost immediately because of the fact that they are everywhere.

we pulled into the drive thru and ordered. i got a chicken sandwich with a large pop and fry and calum got a triple cheesburger, fries, and an oreo mcflurry.

he paid for it again which made me mad because i never pay for anything. not that i want to, i just feel rude.
-
we went through rural parts of small towns for a couple of hours before we got to 7329 bridgeview lane.

i gulped down the lump in my throat and we walked to the front door.

"hello, i'm looking for shawn hernandez ." i said as an old man came to the door.

"are you shawn hernandez?" i asked curiously.

"no no, that is my son. who are you?"

"i'm his daughter, mia."

"and you?" he said pointing to calum.

"i'm her boyfriend calum." he smiled.

"well, i have some heartbreaking news for you guys, do you want to come in and sit?" this man who is supposedly my grandfather asked.

"yeah thanks." i said as we followed him into his living room.

"your father, shawn, he is in jail right now. i am afraid that he is not getting out this time."

"this time?" i said confused.

"he does stupid stuff like steal, sell drugs, join gangs and that kinda stuff. well, this gang he was required to kill which he did. he got caught and he is never getting out."

"can i go see him, i never saw him before?" i asked.

"of course, hop in my car."
-
i sat in the chair staring at the wall and the only thing between me and these criminals was glass.

a man sat down, around his 40's.

"who are you?" he asked a little harsh.

"i am your daughter, mia." i said into the phone and it looked like his childhood puppy has just been hit by a car.

"mia. oh my gosh i miss you so much. you and your brother. your mother, how is she?" he asked concerned.

"not to good, panic and anxiety attacks recently." i said quietly.

he looked like the average criminal, lots of tattoos, really built, scary but something in me really wasn't scared of him.

"how old are you now?" he asked looking me right in the eyes.

"17." i said looking right back into his eyes.

"it's been 17 years? oh mia i miss you so much." he said looking really sad, but not me.

"then why did you leave us?" i asked bluntly.

"i didn't think i was ready for a family." he replied.

"well, have fun in here for the rest of your life." i said back.

"wait, who's the guy behind you." he asked pointing to calum.

"oh, that's calum, my boyfriend." i said looking right into his eyes.

"you have a boyfriend? oh my gosh does your mother know this?" he said trying to sound protective.

your behind a glass wall buddy.

"yeah she does seeing the fact she takes care of me on a daily basis." i said angrily.

he can't be acting like a dad after 17 years of not even knowing me.

"look mia, i'm sorry i got into this mess with this whole getting into jail thing but promise me one thing, when you walk down that aisle have your brother on your arm. it will hurt me that i can't be there but i love you baby.

i really do. marry the man of your dreams and make sure he can better you like i failed to do with your mother."

i was going to make a retort on how he was never there for me, but i thought about it and this could be the first and last time that i see my dad.

"i love you too dad. i'll write you sometime." i smiled and hung up the phone.

i broke down in tears thinking about my wedding day, my dad not able to make it and see me get married to the man of my dreams.

"c'mon here baby." calum said wrapping me in a warm embrace. he kissed the top of my head which for some reason calmed me down.

"sorry i got tears all over your sweatshirt now." i chuckled wiping the rest of the tears away.

"its beyond okay." he said again wrapping me tightly.
