Shubman looked at the doctor with even bigger puppy eyes.
"Please na, Uncle... dekh lo na, kuchh ho jaye to..."
The doctor put the X-ray away and stared at the shining eyes of one of the only people in the world who desperately wanted to get discharged without caring that he still had severe injuries.
Abhi, lying on the nearby bed, scoffed as he flipped another page of his magazine.
"Dekho, Mr. Gill, main pehle bhi bata chuka hoon. Paanch din se pehle discharge nahi ho sakta. Aur agar phir bhi tum nahi maane, to ho sakta hai haddi dhang se settle bhi na ho paaye."
Shubman pouted.
"Come on, Doctor Uncle... aap hi to ek smart dikhe ho iss poore hospital mein. Aur mujhe pata hai... aapse smart iss jagah pe koi hai hi nahi."
The buttering was so obvious that even the nurse standing beside them rolled her eyes.
The doctor, however, adjusted his glasses proudly before saying,
"Even if that is true... tumhara discharge nahi ho sakta."
"Sab ho sakta hai, Uncle... agar aap sabse smart ho sakte ho to..."
Shubman grinned.
The doctor smiled proudly, only to suddenly drop his smile.
"Kya matlab hai iss baat ka?"
"Discharge, Unclllleeee..."
"Nahi milega."
By afternoon, Mayank returned with food and fruits.
It was already the afternoon of the third day, and Shubman was counting every passing hour like the countdown of a ticking bomb. According to his calculations, two and a half days had already passed.
His anxiety was at its peak.
Meanwhile, the two people beside him had other plans.
They were busy smiling at each other like lovers in a park.
"Excuse me!! Meri kisi ko padi bhi hai ya nahi?"
"Moment kharab kar diya..."
Abhi muttered.
Mayank sighed, shaking his head as he placed the bowl on the table.
"Padi hai... teri hi padi hai sabko."
"Oh? Aur kaise padi hai? Tum logon ko pata hai mera BP kitna high hai abhi? I feel like mera dil mere muh mein aa jayega. Itni fat ke chaar ho rakhi hai."
Mayank handed him a banana.
"Ye le... ye kha. Kyunki aadhi tension to teri bhook se hi door ho jaati hai."
"Oyee, kya main bandar-vandar dikhta hoon tum logon ko?"
He took the peeled banana anyway and started eating.
"Tum logon ko samajh hi nahi aa raha..."
Shubman said, half eating, half crying, and half whining.
After finishing, he casually dropped the banana peel on the floor beside his bed.
At that exact moment, the doctor entered the room.
His foot landed directly on the peel.
"Whoa—!"
He slipped instantly, barely managing to balance himself.
"Meri kamar... ah!"
He glared around the room.
