Well, hiyah! I've been craving to write a bit of a serious take on the Kaname x Yuuki ship, so here it is. It was inspired by me introducing my father to Vampire Knight today, which he took quite the interest to. Anyhow, enjoy I guess. I'm sorry that it's so short and uneventful. I'm just getting used to writing more. I'm in the middle of a block.

***

That girl is the only thing I really care about.

White snow frosts the ground in pale flakes. The nearby trees quake silently, eerily, in the somehow noiseless gales. Each and every leaf has fallen off at this point of the year. It was the type of winter where not even the snow fanatics would enjoy spending time outside. The dead middle of January, where one lick of cold could send human flesh into the tight grips of frostbite.

Kaname Kuran lightly plucks the last leaf on the tree branch that stretched across his vision, watching it fall to the pure ground. His watchful, thoughtful eyes trail downwards, all the way across the snow white horizon. His hands were much too pale at the moment. He could blend in with the overcast skies, it seemed. In all honesty, Kaname wouldn't mind disappearing at the moment.

Losing a puppy is hard.

Losing a parent is difficult.

Losing the love of your life?

That's a completely different type of hurt. Yuuki Kuran - Kaname's pure-blooded princess - was never the strong type. She had this potential that she couldn't quite reach, and in the end, it destroyed her. She walked straight into the barrel of her death, and worse yet, the trigger was pulled by someone she cared about almost as much as she loved Kaname. Kaname, after killing this attacker, is dealing with the worst type of feeling.

Grief.

Grief is an entirely new domain to Kaname. He didn't shed a single tear when his parents died. He didn't flinch, shooting the head of Zero Kiriyuu after the disgrace's gun ended Kaname's true love. But holding her small body as it quaked, shivered, and slowly lost life? That was, and will be the only time, that Kaname Kuran has allowed himself to cry.

The only thing he cared about was gone, and he was left with this aching feeling of emptiness that he knew he couldn't ever get used to. An empty winter, an empty life, and an empty soul. Kaname didn't realize that such a privileged person, such as himself, could possibly dwindle down to this shell of a man.

Heck, he wasn't even a man. He was a beast in human form.

Everything about Yuuki Kuran flashes before his glowing eyes. Her smile, her laugh, her sweet scent. Everything about Yuuki was soft, down to the very tip of her fourth finger. Kaname, even in such a state, could not suppress a tight smile at the mere thought of her. It quickly disappears as he realizes that she's gone, and there was no bringing her back.

In all honesty, Yuuki Kuran was an idiotic, idealistic, scatterbrained girl.

But even when that is so, she is all Kaname cared for in his entire, pathetic, life.
