[ 25 ] FINALLY SEEN
TOSHA
The following morning felt like a blurb. It felt like I just lived through the worst dream I'd ever had. Only it was not a dream. It was my reality. The night prior did not feel real. Not only was I surprised, I was confused on why my father would show up after all of these years of no contact. I had prepared my life to no longer include him. This was not something I was prepared for. I did not need anything shaking up the end of my pregnancy when I was already so anxious about my labor and delivery.
The gleaming sun shining through my bedroom patio doors woke me from my slumber. I yawned as I felt Theo kick me.
"Ow," I muttered out, taking my time to fully open my eyes.
I did not feel or hear Matteo's breathing next to me, so I knew he'd left for his morning run.
I stretched my body and could feel the hunger beginning to take over me. I got myself up and wiped my face.
I turned over the best I could and rubbed my belly.
I made my way to my bathroom and took a quick shower while lightly washing my scalp, causing my hair to curl back up into a curly afro.
Last night while I was in complete shock and stuck with the unknown on why my father was here, Matteo helped to get my frail father into one of our downstairs guest bedrooms. I could only get out a greeting to my father while he walked past me inside our home as I hadn't a clue what could possible have made him come all the way here.
As I got dressed for the day, I wasn't sure what would come of me seeing my father and having to speak with him. Over the years, I'd practice what I wanted to say to him over a million times and each time felt more and more discouraging as I actually didn't know what I wanted to say.
I got dressed and rubbed cocoa butter lotion on my belly and my arms and legs, getting the key spots as best as I could. After, I made my way downstairs. It was pretty early so I knew the gardeners probably had already came.
With each step, I felt a strange shift around my abdomen, but I dismissed it, thinking the weird feeling was due to me stepping down the steps with the added weight of this pregnancy.
I finally made it down the flight of stairs.
We need a damn elevator, I thought.
I made my way to the kitchen to get started on breakfast as I was starving. Baby boy was kicking and ready to eat.
Once I made it to the kitchen, I went to the refrigerator to get my ingredients out and as I did so, I saw the figure of the frail man I saw last night. Outside by my pool, my father sat on a pool chair, hunched over but I could not see his face, only his backside.
The front door sounded, causing me to turn my head.
"Baby?" I called out, hoping it was my husband, Matteo.
"Yes, babe. I went out for my morning run." He called out.
"I figured," I said just as he approached the doorway of the kitchen.
As he walked forward to me, he embraced me even though he smelled and felt sticky from sweat. I embraced him as well, not caring too much as I missed his touch from this morning,
"Your hair looks so beautiful, baby." He whispered before leaning down to meet his lips with mine.
I stepped into his embrace and kissed him back. "Thank you, baby. I washed it this morning."
Matteo kissed me again then nudged his head towards the pool outside area. "He's been out there since I went out for my run. I haven't said anything to him, have you?"
