TOSHA
The evening was cool as the sun sat just a little below the horizon. After my day at the restaurant, I made it home safely and decided to treat myself to a bubble bath. I needed to relax my muscles and reduce my stress levels. Although I was taking it easy for the baby, I knew I had to rest but something in me continued to push myself to complete the last few touches of the menu. It felt like a project that needed to be completed, regardless of my current state. But that wasn't the most rational thought, as I was just a few weeks away from delivering my son.
The bubble bath was to relieve stress from my body, not just from work but also from the news I'd received today.
Matteo and I had been in communication via text but I knew today was his sponsorship event and there might've been interviews or other photo ops that were required of him. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, as I was used to choosing a narrative and sticking by it, instead of gathering more details of the truth.
Nonetheless, the photos and videos circling around the team in the press all pointed to him going out with his teammates for a night of fun to do God knows what with dancers, without informing me about it while I was home, 8 months pregnant and ready to pop.
Still, I knew my husband and I trusted my husband.
I placed my hand on the railing of my balcony, enjoying the breeze as it raked through my ponytail.
I wore a laced night dress and a long satin and feather robe, one that was gifted to me by Matteo for my birthday last year. I trailed my hand over my breasts, noticing how tender they were. They were full and it seemed as if the more my body developed for the baby, the more my hormones were fluctuating.
Unlike some people, my hair was thickening and my skin was clear. Lactation made my breast full and heavy.
The feeling of my phone vibrating caught my attention. I turned to the seat where my cup of tea sat on my balcony table near my chairs.
My husband's contact photo flashed across my screen. It was a facetime call.
I paused for a moment, taking a deep breath in.
I made it to the chair, sat down and grabbed my phone, facing the way of the sun to enjoy the sun that was left before it disappeared beyond the horizon.
"Hello?" I answered, holding the phone up to my face.
Matteo grunted, and the sound of hearing a cushioned flop followed in the background and his face took the frame of the camera. His dark brown hair framed his face well and his facial hair appeared neatly trimmed, maybe for the event.
"Baby, I've been thinking about you all day, today." He replied, appearing a bit fatigued but his voice genuinely cheerful to see me.
I cracked a smile. I did miss him. I always did, no matter how long he was away for. "I miss you," I admitted. "The bed doesn't feel as warm as it does when you're here." I told him.
His eyes scanned my face in the camera, a twinkle in his eyes. "I have a few more days then I will return to you. The bed won't be cold for too long." He paused. "Baby, let me see you. What are you wearing?"
I didn't know where he was going with this but by the twinkle in his eyes, I knew it would deter us from the main matter I wished to get off my chest.
"Matteo, is that what you really want to talk about?" I questioned him, reaching over for my mug and bringing the tea to my mouth to test the temperature.
The corners of his mouth ticked but as he looked into the camera at my face, he could see I was thinking beyond what he was thinking.
