Hey peeps, I know it's been over a year since I wrote a chapter for this book and I apologize for that. A lot had happened within that year, like... a lot. For the longest time I was in a not so great living situation so last July I finally moved out but doing so required me to switch to full time overnight shifts, which took a few months to get used to.
Then September came around and I lost a friend that I used to play dungeons and dragons with. I was a former DM and would run sessions every other Sunday at a local hobby store. I say former DM because I haven't been able to get myself to run anything after what happened. She was only 23 battling against doctors who didn't catch the lung cancer until it got to the point where she needed to undergo a risky surgery near her heart. I won't lie when I say it still hurts to talk about it. Still hurts to even think about the fact that someone with as bright of a personality as she did, was gone so soon. As someone who's only two years away from turning 30, I still don't understand why I got to live this long but she wasn't given that same chance. I had been texting her boyfriend that morning, trying to get updates and contemplating on getting a plane ticket when she passed. He had told me the infection after the surgery had gotten worse overnight, and less than an hour later she was gone. The news hit hard and I lost interest in any of my hobbies that day. Couldn't bring myself to write, couldn't look or think about D&D, and I found myself stuck in a constant state of dissociation.
Around that same time I found out that my grandfather wasn't doing well. He had been in and out of the hospital and my Dad knew he didn't have much time left either. Unfortunately, I hadn't gotten the chance to get to know him as well as I did my friend, but I knew him as family. I had faint memories of us visiting him as a kid, and I remember being able to talk to him for the first time over the phone when I had finally gotten emancipated at 17. I spent a lot of time traveling between two different cities to spend any time that I could with him, and to support my Dad who was taking things pretty hard. He ended up passing away last month, and ironically, on the same day out of the month as my friend had. My entire job involves taking care of people who are at the end of life. Losing someone at work never got any easier, but it's an entirely different kind of pain when death slips into your personal life.
So long story short, the reason why I haven't been providing story updates, was because I was learning some very hard life lessons. We aren't guaranteed tomorrow. Cherish the moments you have with the people you love. Always Lock those good, positive memories into your brain, because they might be the only thing that keeps you from breaking when you text your friend and they can no longer text back.
I am ok now. Definitely not great since I still can't talk about these things without tears finding their way out, but an amazing friend who has been supporting me through all of this, told me something that's helped. "It only hurts because you loved them." That is a type of pain I am ok with feeling now, because I did indeed love them and left a lasting, positive impact. While I don't know if I'll ever get back into running Dungeons and Dragons, I will be getting back into writing. I am aware that a lot of people on here read as an escape from the harsh realities we live in, and I do not wish to take that away. I've already got a couple paragraphs typed for the next chapter of this book, and I apologize for dipping for an entire year without giving a heads up.
