Chapter 6: Sunny Days & Music BoothsI wake up on Friday, and am relieved that I wasn't woken up by my alarm clock. I flip over, and lay in my bed for a moment, enjoying the peace and quiet.
After a few moments, I kick off the sheets and begin to get dressed. Today I'm going to the studio with Jake and his band.
I pull on a long-sleeved maroon shirt and a pair of white shorts. I French braid my hair into a side braid, and put on a brown fedora. I tug on my high top black Converse and add silver rings and a matching arrow necklace.
I step out of my bathroom, and head to the kitchen. I check the clock hanging on the wall, and see it's just past nine twenty. I grab a granola bar and a glass of water, and sit down in the living room, and go through my phone. I see a text from an unfamiliar number.
Bree, I miss you so much, baby. I'm so sorry for what I did. I wish more than anything I could take it back. I would fly to the moon and back for you, I would take a bullet for you. I love you, and always will.
I love you,
DavidI roll my eyes, and exit out from the chat. I answer some other texts from Cindy and other friends from school, checking my phone while eating my granola bar.
My phone pings with a text, and I check it.
It's from Jake.
Hey, waiting in your lobby. Come down when you're ready :)
I answer back, telling him I'll be down in a moment. I grab a post-it from our junk drawer and scribble a quick note telling everyone I already left.
I grab my purse, and stuff in the essentials, and grab my keys from my bowl, and head out the door, locking it behind me. I press the button to the elevator, and wait a short amount of time before the door opens. I step in and unconsciously hum to West Coast.
When the doors slide open, I spot Jake sitting in one of the lobby chairs in the waiting room. His eyes meet mine, and he waves, flashing his white teeth. I wave back, and head over. He stands, and we meet half way.
"Hey," I say, giving a small wave.
"Hey," he greets back. "You ready to head out?"
I nod, smiling. "Yeah, let's go."
He leads me out, and pulls on his sunglasses before exiting. I grab mine out of my purse, sliding them on as we exit the building.
It's a sunny day, as usual, in Los Angeles. Jake's car is parked in front of the building, the roof down. He opens the door for me, and I thank him. He walks to the other side and slides in. He inserts the key into the ignition, and turns it, and the engine purrs to life.
I take in the warm leather seats, and the beautiful interior. I lean my head back, my braid slightly blowing in the wind.
"It's so nice out," I say, hanging my hand over the side of the car.
"It is," Jake replies, nodding. He pauses for a moment. "So what's it like back home for you?"
I contemplate my answer, taking in my surroundings as I do so. "Home is... comforting. And wild. My dad's rarely home, so it's just me, my sister, and aunt. And school... Is definitely something else. I have good grades," I say, playing with the tips of my hair, "but it's all that high school drama shit that makes it all so crazy. It's just so unneeded. You know?"
He nods in agreement, a thoughtful look on his face. "Yeah. I know exactly what you mean."
I nod, and lean back again. "So what's life like for you up here?"
