Chapter Ten: August 28th"Bree," he answered breathlessly.
"Can we talk?"
He looked stricken, but quickly recovered. "Sure. Let's head somewhere else though?" He asked, gesturing back to the building.
I nodded, and he held out his arm for me, leading me back inside. He took me down a hall, and soon enough, we were in a quiet section.
We sat down in a love seat, the quiet becoming deafening.
I broke it by starting up the conversation. "What do you mean you don't 'remember?'"
"I supposedly got into a car wreck," he started, and I gasped, my heart aching. "And I hit my head pretty bad, which caused some memory loss."
My hands were covering my mouth. "I'm so sorry."
"No need."
"When do they say it was?"
"August 28th."
My eyes widened. The day I left for Los Angeles.Does that mean that this was my fault...
"I'm so sorry."
"No need. It's not your fault."
But is it?
"I don't remember breaking up," he stated, looking me in the eye.
I swallowed hard. He can't remember why. That was the pick that started chipping away at the wall I had built.
"We broke up b-because you c-ch-cheated on me."
His eyes were wide. "I did what?"
I laughed, but not a kind one. More of a nervous one. "Yeah, you cheated on me... with three girls."
If it was even possible, his eyes got even wider. "I did not," he said in shock.
I nodded grimly. "You did."
He was in shock, and took a moment to process everything. "I can't believe I would do that!"
"I didn't either. Until I saw."
"You saw?"
I nodded, tears pricking my eyes because of the sensitivity of the subject.
"Bree, I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am. I can't believe it."
"Well that's what happened," I answered, a tear escaping my eyes.
David had a sullen expression. He reached out and brushed the tear away. But his hand didn't move.
"You hurt me," I said, looking at him with mistrust.
"And I'm so sorry. I wish I could go back and change it, honestly. I would never mean to hurt you."
I looked into his eyes and felt all the pieces fly back together, and I hated my heart for it.
No matter how much he hurt me, my heart just throbbed always going back to him.
His eyes were searching mine as his eyes darted back and forth. He leaned in closer, and soon enough, our lips met. I missed the familiar feel of his lips. He cupped his hands around my face as I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him close.
The sound of something dropping made us jump apart, and I looked around. Footsteps sounded and I got up and looked into the hall. Just as I peered around the corner, a suit coat disappeared.
I sat back down, a bit frustrated. Going back to David could mean getting my heart broken again. And then I realized something.
He wasn't the only one who had my heart. Someone else did, as well. And the thought made me smile.
