Dead Among Us

Chapter 7: Fear the Dead and The Living

The sun has now risen at the hour of six. Lindsey and I have been keeping watch for about six hours now. We use to have somewhat of competitions before any of this happened where we would stay up for hours and hours until one or the other falls asleep first. So staying up this late isn't new to us. (BANG....BANG) "What was that?", Lindsey asked quickly. "It's them.", I answered. "They're awake." We climb down the pole that leads to roof we are standing on now and we walk to the cafeteria doors. I take out the keys and I unlock the doors. Danny and Anthony walk out while the others in the cafeteria are just waking up. "Morning to you two", Lindsey said. "Morning", Danny and Anthony said together.

Samantha, Frank, and Maria were still asleep. "Well, don't want to wake them just yet", I said. Danny and Anthony walk to vending machine and grab some chips. "We have got to get some real food mate.", Lindsey said. "Yeah", I said. "Those vending machines won't last very long. We should try hitting that grocery store I saw." Lindsey nodded her head.  "We really got to teach them all how to evade those geeks. Don't want them to get killed.", I said.

We heard the cafeteria doors open. Danny and Anthony grab two Doritos bags and looked at who walked out of the cafeteria door. Danny smiled. I look back and Samantha had awoken and yawned. She walked toward Danny and laid her head on his chest. I smiled. I walked back into the cafeteria to see who was waking up and who was still sleeping. Maria and Frank were still asleep, so I decided to let them sleep. They had a rough night last night. However, I also noticed something very strange.

No dead ones seemed to have payed any attention to them unless they made any noise. Like when they fired shots. "Edward!", Samantha called for me. I walked towards her. "Yes?", I asked Samantha. "Are we going to get some real food soon?", she asked. I took a moment to answer so I could think but I wasn't quite sure. "Soon. We will probably get food at the grocery store.", I said. I did remember that Officer Wayne's car won't be big enough to fit all of us now. Considering that we have two other members in our group now.

Not only was I aware that Wayne's car won't be big enough to hold all of us, however, I did remember seeing a big yellow school bus at the back of the school when I was trying to get inside of the cafeteria the day everything had changed. I stood on a table that was near the vending machines and I spoke to most of the group. "Hey, listen you lot. I have a plan to take food from the grocery store that we passed by yesterday. We need a bigger vehicle that can at least handle the walkers and runners and be as durable as possible, plus it needs to carry most of us, so I have an idea. Use the yellow school bus that I saw in the back of the school. I'm pretty sure that the keys are in the vehicle. Most drivers from Varela leave it in the bus.", I said.

"What about when we open the gates and close them, that bus may take a while to move to get out of the school?", Danny asked. "Also some of us may have to stay behind.", I said. I sat on the table with my legs crisscrossing and I continued to speak. "Some of us will have to distract the geeks in order for the bus to make it out of the school. Safely at least. They will need to get the walkers and runners away from the gate as far as possible, so that they won't have a second distraction." The cafeteria doors had open once again, and out came Frank and Maria.

"You guys going on a run without us?" Frank said as Maria yawned aloud. "Yeah, will we wanted you to catch some sleep. We got quite a workout yesterday", I responded. Maria started to open her eyes while trying to avoid the sunlight. "I'm going back to bed. Tell me what you guys got when you get back here" Maria said as she walked back into the cafeteria. Frank decided follow us, in an attempt to do more for the group.
