Ezra waited in his kitchen for someone to get back. He’d been here for an hour and a half, with nothing to do. His brother, mother or father weren’t around, but surely Carmen and Harrison walked up here when they left? And where was Kevin? That guy hadn’t really left the house since he got here.

He decided to make himself a cup of tea, and sat back down at the table, drumming his hands on the wood. Suddenly, the door burst open and Harrison came bouncing in, looking fully awake. “Uncle Ezra!”

“Harrison!” Ezra replied, ignoring the small shooting of pain that ran through him at the word uncle. “Where did you go, little man?”

“With daddy. We dropped mommy off.”

“Dropped her off?” Ezra frowned, and walked to the door to see Kevin walking up the path. Images of meeting Kevin for the first time at the hospital came rushing through his head, but he ignored it. “Where’s Carmen?”

“She had to go deal with some things in Plymouth.”

“Plymouth? What could she possibly have to deal with there? She’s never been!”

“It’s complicated,” Kevin replied, finally reaching the kitchen entrance. “It might be the press, but she’s gone to meet Gretchen to sort it out and then she’s coming back later. Gretchen is bringing her.”

                “Who’s Gretchen?”

“Why do you even car—” Kevin cut himself off and rubbed his temples, sighing. “I’m sorry, Ezra. I didn’t mean to snap.”

“It’s alright,” the boy barked back. “I was just asking.”

“The press might be printing something in the papers, Carmen needs to make sure that they don’t.”

                “Oh, yeah. Because she’s famous.”

                “Yeah.” Kevin replied.

“Right, well… what are  you doing?”

“I was going to check up on the hospital. I have a long term patient that has another doctor, and I need to make sure he’s not playing up whilst I’m gone.”

                “How long will that take?”

“About two minutes,” Kevin replied. “Why?”

                “Can we go out?”

                Kevin laughed, confused. “Excuse me?”

“You haven’t seen much of Polperro,” Ezra explained, “I know this place like the back of my hand—”

“Have you ever even studied the back of your hand, Ezra?”

“That’s beside the point,” Ezra argued, “it’s just a saying, isn’t it? Anyway, I figured, we could all go out, you know, you, me and Harrison.”

Kevin paused, pursing his lips together for a moment. Then he pushed Harrison into the living room, instructing that he had to play by himself for a few minutes. He pulled out a chair and sat down on the table, next to Ezra’s cup. “If you want to spend some time with Harrison, I’m sure you can. I have no right to keep him from you, and Carmen isn’t here to tell you that you can’t.” Although, that didn’t mean that Kevin didn’t really want to let Harrison out of his sight. Carmen was sure to kill him for it later if he did, but he knew his place.
