“Carmen,” Ezra nearly whispered, his voice was low but that soothing tone that he used around Carmen was still comforting to the ear. She opened her eyes, turning around so her head was to the side on the pillow.
“Yeah?” She replied groggily. “What’s wrong?”
He gripped tight on the duvet as he smiled. It was a real smile. It wasn’t normal, his dimple on his left cheek wasn’t distinctive but this smile was real. It reached his eyes. “Will you…” he hesitated. “Will you marry me?”
Carmen swallowed. Stunned. “What?”
“I said—”
“No, no, I heard you.” She replied replied quickly, sitting up so her hair fell in front of her face. She quickly brushed it away. “Are you serious?”
He nodded.
“Yeah. Okay.” Her voice was low, flowing through her slightly parted lips. Her smile was subtle, sincere, but powerful. She nodded and he blinked, as if it took a long time for the words to register. And then he got up, off his knees and placed his hands on her waist. Before she knew it, he picked her up. A laugh escaped Carmen’s lips but it wasn’t long before it was cut short when Ezra crashed his lips against hers. He traced his tongue across her mouth before he gained access and weaved his hands in her long red-brown hair. Before either of them had a chance to catch their breaths after breaking apart and opening their eyes, clapping erupted around the large room.
Carmen turned to face Rae, their teacher, long before Ezra did, and bowed before he even turned to look at the audience.
“Well done guys.” Their drama teacher said, stepping forwards onto the stage. “That was amazing.”
“Thanks.” Carmen replied, holding onto Ezra’s shoulder to jump down from the bed after Ezra placed her there, letting go when they stopped kissing each other. “Was it okay?”
“Brilliant. You’re the perfect people for this. I’m so glad I picked you both.”
Smiling triumphantly, Carmen hit her hip against Ezra’s. He looked at her and grinned, before turning around to receive a hug from a girl called Katy. Carmen rolled her eyes at them. She was in their drama class and had her eye on Ezra. Most of the girls did. His curly brown hair and big green eyes made him stand out amongst others. He was tall too and athletic, so he had a great body. The only thing was – he never seemed to want a girlfriend.
“Well done, Carmen.”
“Thanks Rae.” Carmen said, watching the stage manager order backstage students to lift and move the double bed that was in the middle of the stage. “But I’ve got to go. I’ll see you later.”
“Bye.”
Carmen tapped Ezra’s shoulder and indicated that they needed to leave. Without saying their goodbyes they left. They grabbed their bags, got in their car and then turned to look at each other. “Well done.”
“I could say the same thing.” Carmen replied. “Wow, we really are good at drama.”
“Don’t be conceded.”
