Ever since Ezra had moved from the beautiful countryside of Cornwall to London, he didn’t enjoy getting up in the mornings. In one sense, he became more of a night time person rather than an early riser, but today he had gotten up early, went outside where Carmen couldn’t hear him and rang his friends.
Oscar picked up the phone after only a couple of minutes, but Ezra could tell the call had woken him up. “Hello?”
“Oscar?”
“Yeah… what is it, Ezra?” He mumbled.
“Are you free today and tomorrow?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“Brilliant.” The boy replied, completely ignoring his friend’s question. “I’ll pick you and Olivia up in a couple of hours. It’ll take us about two-to-three hours to get to where we need to go. Okay?”
“What time is it?” Oscar asked, and at the same time, he sounded like he was stretching.
“Six thirty.”
“What’s all of this in aid of?”
Ezra shrugged, even though his friend couldn’t see that. “I’m just feeling very spontaneous.”
“Fine. Do I need money?”
“Yeah some. I’ll have some if you run out, though.”
“I have enough of my own—” Oscar’s family didn’t have highly respected jobs like Ezra or Carmen but they got by and have a good house for what they lived on. “—Wait, are we going out of the country?” he asked, seeming more awake now than he had a moment ago. “Because, dude, I don’t have a passport.”
“We’re not going out of the country. Just out of the city.”
“Are you going to tell me where?”
“Nope.”
“Fine. I’ll get ready and go pick Olivia up. Shall I drive to yours?”
“Yeah, you can park in the space where the Silver car usually is. We’ll be taking that with us but I’ll move it when you get here. Don’t be too late, okay? I want to get there early.”
“Sure.” Oscar replied before saying his goodbye. Ezra heard a click and turned his phone off after.
Realising just how cold it now was, Ezra shivered and he tried pulling his dressing gown around him. His feet were warm because he had put slippers on and he had tracksuit bottoms on him but he didn’t have a top underneath his gown and could tell there was Goosebumps on his arms. He was too excited, earlier, to tell how cold it was but now he was concentrating on the wind, he thought it was best to get back inside quickly. Hopefully, he thought, where we’re going, the sun will be out.
After hurrying back into his flat, Ezra went to the kitchen quietly as he was still the only one up. Carmen hadn’t felt tired until around three o’clock and Ezra at four-thirty so when he carried Carmen down to bed – who had fallen asleep on his shoulder – and gone to his own room, he had thought of this plan instead of just spending the day in the house reading and playing piano.
