Finding the center of a forest is harder than it seems. I mean, all you see are trees.
I held Farlo's book close to my chest as I walked through the dark forest. As I walked farther and farther, I began to wish I had stayed with Mercury, Radar and Thomas.
I began to loose a bit of my confidence. Could I get my stutter in order for the counter curse? I read it over and over again as I walked to what I hoped was the middle of the forest.
Even though the sun was probably starting to come up, no light was able to filter through the tree tops. It made it incredibly creepy.
I could say I was heroic, and ready to face what was coming to me.
Sort of.
But I wasn't. I'm not exactly a Heracles. I can't even talk for God's sake.
I was biting my lip, and contemplating what to do, when I slipped on a log and hit the ground. How many times I would fall today, I didn't know. But luckily, I fell in a good spot.
I looked up, and saw the area I had fallen into.
It was a small clearing, with a bubbling stream. The grass was a bright green, and a gnarled tree stood in the center. It had a large trunk, with careful lettering, spelled Home written on it. Near the large roots, a small faded sign stood, saying Welcome To Mordale. The sign had daisies all over it, and a small grave stood near by. I remembered from the book, that Farlo's wife had been buried there.
I came forward, reading the transcript:
Lilia Bend. Beloved wife and mother.
I swallowed, feeling like I was disrespecting it, considering I was ridding a curse near it.
I picked a daisy, and set it respectively on Lilia's grave.
Time for business.
I opened the book, flipping to the page for the counter curse.
I cleared my throat, feeling a bit awkward. Would I be able to do anything? Would it still work with my stutter?
"G-go a-a-away to s-save y-your-"
Before I could say anything else, the wind starting blowing hard. Too hard. "N-n-no." I was stupid to think Farlo wouldn't try to stop me.
The wind picked up. "G-g-go a-away t-t-to save-"
The book began to turn its pages rapidly. And the wind was pushing me back and forth. "S-stop i-it F-F-Farlo!" I yelled to the air.
The book was loosening from my hands. I held on tight, and then it began moving. I was dragged on the ground, dirt going into my face.
I was dragged for a bit longer before the book slipped out of my hands. I yelped as I hit the ground again. I blinked a couple of times, and gasped.
I saw Farlo picking the book off the ground in front of me.
I looked up at him, seeing him as before, but more powerful. Farlo looked at the book in wonder. And then he laughed. It was triumphant, holding the book up in the air.
And then he looked at me.
"It's over Cricket. This battle is done."
I knew Farlo wouldn't hurt me, but I couldn't let him take the book. I stood, shakily, to my feet. I saw my bruised and scratched up legs.
"This is far from over, Farlo."
