Above is a visual for Thomas. Just imagine him a bit younger, and with more of Cricket's features.
Mercury's scream was high and shrill. The storm had gotten violent, and lightning claps were hitting the ground. The jeep was spinning out of control. I hung on as tight as possible. The jeep was so fast I found it difficult to hold on to my lunch.
"Radar!" Screamed Thomas. "What's going on?" Radar was struggling to get the jeep back in order. "I dunno! It just started spinning itself!"
Heather's warning about Farlo flashed in my head. I began to panic when time slowly seemed to stop. The jeep stopped spinning. Mercury stopped screaming. And Thomas' mouth hung wide open.
Nothing was moving. Radar gasped, shaking everybody back to reality. We were hanging over a cliff. Wait a minute...Mordale didn't have any cliffs. How'd that happen? I shook my head. We had to get out of the jeep.
I peered over the edge. The cliff dropped off abruptly, and the tiny town buildings were at the bottom. Mercury and Radar were dipped downwards in the front seat, and the back seat was on the top, the back wheels allowing the jeep to hang off the edge. The roof was completely ripped off. How, I don't know.
I was breathing hard. Thomas spoke shakily, "Nobody move. I have an idea." I'm glad Thomas took this one. I had no idea how to get out.
Thomas grunted, and turned to Radar, who was still holding on to the wheel with white knuckles, his glasses crooked. "Radar...let go of the wheel. Now lean back in your seat." Radar did as he was told. His hands were shaking. "Mercury, do the same." Mercury leaned back as well, her face pale.
"Cricket...get out of the jeep." I wrapped my hand around the handle, and slowly pushed the door open. The jeep creaked a bit, but stayed rooted to the spot. I swallowed the bile in my mouth as I looked down. The cliff was very steep. It was raised recently. Dirt was still falling, and a half a house was at the bottom. I gasped a little as I saw pieces of the house at the top. Farlo had literally gave us new landscapes.
I grabbed my backpack with the book, and stepped out of the jeep. Miraculously, the jeep stayed where it was. It leaned a little to the side.
Radar gulped as it shifted. He was the lighter side now since I had left. I scrambled up farther, so I was safely off the side.
Thomas cleared his throat. "Mercury, climb onto Cricket's side. And then get out." Mercury carefully unbuckled, and then with surprising agility, climbed into to my seat. She opened the door, and then crawled to where I was. Mercury leaned a bit over the side to see Thomas and Radar.
Thomas took a shaky breath. "Radar, this part is pretty delicate. Once you get out, the jeep will be completely unbalanced. Grab my hand, and then pull me out as quick as possible. Mercury, Cricket, your help is welcome."
Radar nodded, and I came to stand next to Mercury near the edge. Radar, unbuckled, and he moved a bit. The jeep shifted dangerously, and he yelped and held onto the seat. It stopped, and Radar took a breath. He climbed behind, and very quick, opened the door and climbed out. The jeep shifted, and one wheel came off the side. Thomas screamed, "Pull me out!"
We all went forward, and Radar quickly grabbed his lower arm. I grabbed his hand, and Mercury grabbed his other arm.
We pulled, and the jeep fell out from beneath him. The jeep teetered off the edge, and then bounced a couple times on the side. Finally, it fell completely apart at the bottom of the cliff. The pieces were scattered, and I immediately knew that the jeep would probably never be fixed. I saw Mercury wince. Thomas coughed. "Guys, still dangling over the edge here."
We pulled him on to the side, and we all fell down in a heap, gasping for breath. Mercury whimpered. "My dad's gonna kill me." I wrapped my hands around her, pulling her into a comforting hug.
We looked down at out town. I saw with horror more platforms of earth were bursting out of the ground. I saw the middle school had been torn apart by the platforms.
It was a solemn silence as we watched. And then Radar spoke. "I guess we're going on foot then." I stood, shrugging my shoulders. I was soon followed by Thomas, then Radar, and finally Mercury.
Mercury sighed, turning away from the jeep. "What am I doing, crying over a stupid vehicle. Let's go."
