Happy birthday! I am so happy that this day has come for you, that your happy.
I have started countless letters to you. I have discarded even more. Today I will try and not sound angry or full of bitter grudges. Instead I will speak of something that happened long before my bitterness.
You have taught me something, I didn't know I already had. You taught me to have fun at parties, to be extroverred. To have fun, to take pictures.
Once we had a conversation and I asked you if you'd give up your semi-perfect life so someone else could have a chance at a great life as well. You hesitated I think. And you said yes, you'd give it all up. I was astounded. You made me realize that people really were good at heart. That they cared for those they did not know. For a moment you gave me hope.
I have written this letter knowing you'll never read it. Knowing if you did you'd likely not remember this moment. Knowing that if someone told you it existed you'd skew from it, but I write it in the hopes that I am wrong. In hopes that you'll read this anonymous letter and remember me. Not as my most recent self but as the one you called best friend.
Sincerely,
An old friend
