Too Close to Home
Y/n's POV
I stood by the window. The view outside was still. The clouds hung low over the hills, casting a moody gray over Jeju's peaceful landscape.
My phone hadn't buzzed all day. No new messages. No missed calls. Just that same, quiet void where his presence should've been. I kept telling myself it didn't matter that I needed the space too. That maybe we both did.
But the silence still hurt.
I turned when I heard a knock at the door. My mom peeked in again, holding sliced fruit and tea.
"You need to eat something, sweetheart."
I offered a tired smile and took the tray from her hands. "Thanks."
She lingered for a second, her eyes soft and knowing. "You talked to him yet?"
"No," I said, shaking my head. "I sent a message yesterday. He didn't reply."
She nodded as if she expected that. "Men like Jungkook... they carry the world on their shoulders. Sometimes they forget they're allowed to set it down."
"Yeah, well," I muttered, setting the tray on the desk, "he's not the only one with a heavy load."
"I know." She came closer and placed a hand gently on my arm. "But the difference is... he's still learning to share it. And you've always carried everyone else's pain but your own."
I didn't say anything.
She left me with a kiss on the cheek and one last glance filled with quiet encouragement.
Once the door shut, I sat on the bed and stared at the tea. My stomach turned at the thought of eating, but I forced down a few pieces of fruit anyway.
I needed energy. I needed to be ready for whatever came next.
My thoughts drifted back to the facility. To Yeri. The strange look in her eyes. Not madness, not chaos... something else. Something that still made my skin crawl.
She knew something.
And I hadn't even gotten close to figuring out what it was.
I reached for my notebook. I kept it hidden even from Jungkook. Notes. Dates. Names. Connections that didn't quite fit but also didn't quite disappear.
I still wanted to figure out who warned us about the traitor. Who are they? They have to have some connection to either of us. My guess is that they're somewhat connected to Jungkook.
At first, I thought it was Yeri. It was the obvious choice, but I'm convinced she is telling the truth. I don't trust her, but I think she has no reason to lie now. Everything she did was because someone made her do it.
Then I've also been thinking of Jungkook's adoptive mother. We have heard very little from her since Jungkook's dad got caught. She got fined for her actions, but we haven't talked to her in ages. She is free and knows the consequences.
Jungkook didn't cut ties with her. After all, she was part of his life for a long time. He thinks she had no word about what his father said or did.
I won't close her off from my list. I haven't even mentioned her to Jungkook, and I don't know if Jungkook has thought about her, too.
Either way, I don't have many options.
The day moved forward slowly, like wading through water. The morning mist had lifted, but the sky remained a heavy, lifeless gray, matching the weight I'd been carrying in my chest.
