Culture Day has finally arrived and it's exciting! The atmosphere is dense with festivities and family oriented fun. A plethora of parades are taking place on nearly every street. Performances are spread far and wide from city to city entertaining audiences and passersby alike with each performance fascinating with it's own identity. Artworks of both professionals and amateurs are exhibited to the public flooding the streets with abstract colors and concepts. The smell of fried, steamed, boiled, and grilled food pollutes the air intoxicating the noses of every person that it enchants. Several schools ranging from primary to university have also set up their own festivals alongside this holiday. It was unusually warm being November bet no one can care enough to complain when they're surrounded by great food and entertainment.
"Okay, today's the day. I just need to be cool and calm and try not to fumble around with my words too much." Yuusuke said to himself while taking in deep breaths to calm his nerves. It took him a while to finally find Moa in a sea of people bumping into each other as they shimmy their ways on the streets.
"Hey, Moa! My god, it took me forever to find you!" exclaimed a winded Yuusuke.
"Oh hey Yuusuke! Glad to see you here. Say, you haven't happened to come across Tendou have you? I need to tell him something."
"Hehehe, if I did I should get an award for doing so. It's too easy to lose your group in this kind of environment."
"Aww, okay. Let me know if you see him. I'm gonna keep searching."
"Ah! Wait!" Yuusuke reached out to her hand before she could merge herself into the crowded place.
"Before you go. I need to tell you something. It's important--can you spare me a few seconds?"
"Alright. But it better be important."
After finding a decently quiet place away from the rambling festivities, Yuusuke now had the opportunity to finally come out to Moa.
"So whaddya need Yuusuke?"
Yuusuke was deathly nervous, his palms were clammy and his face was turning a pinkish-red.
"Um....Moa...we've been friends for a while now right? Well--hehe--I mean of course we have, I shouldn't have asked. Uh--Moa...I......like...you...I--" Yuusuke took in a deep breath and wiped the waterfall of sweat from his face.
"I like you....'like' as in I like you more than a friend. We've been friends for so long and I've been holding in these feelings for so long that I just can't bottle it up anymore. Moa Kikuchi...I....love you." Moa was taken by surprise when those three words came from Yuusuke's mouth.
"Ever since I saw you when we were merely in primary school not knowing anything about the world, I've always had this churning feeling in my stomach. I guess this is what people mean when they say they have 'butterflies in their stomach'. We've been through so much together and we've seen each other change and grow as respectable human beings. I've seen you when you were at your lowest point and helped you through it and you did the same with me. Moa, you...are the greatest friend that I could ever wish for. You are the greatest thing that I never had. I love you more than what these words can convey. You are a beautiful and bright and loving person.....and I don't know if I'll ever get the fortune of meeting anyone like you ever again. And because I'm not going to risk that chance, I'm asking you: will you be my girlfriend?" Tears began to swell up in Yuusuke's eyes.
"You--....You're serious......aren't you?" asked a confused Moa.
"With all of my heart, I am as truthful as I have ever been in my life." responded Yuusuke.
"Listen...Yuusuke....I like you too...but--"
"But?"
"I see you more like a brother--like a family member--than a love interest, because of how much history we have together. You're a good person Yuusuke......but I don't think this will work out. I'm afraid I can't reciprocate your feelings the same way."
"Oh.........I see....." Disappointment eclipsed Yuusuke's face. Disappointment turned into sadness. Feeling bad for breaking Yuusuke's heart, Moa gave him a warm embrace and assured him that there are many other women out their in the world just waiting their chance to meet him and his feelings towards her won't alter the flow of their friendship. After the embrace, the saddened Yuusuke looked into Moa's eyes.
"So you like Tendou, then. That's why you were looking for him."
"Yes. I'm very, very, sincerely sorry Souji."
"So what makes him better than me?"
"Let's not make the atmosphere more awkward than it already is."
Before they knew it, the day was already coming to an end. People were clearing out and heading home leaving behind wrappers and other kinds of trash to keep the streets company.
"Oh no, I'm too late! Tendou must've gone home by now!" a frustrated Moa said to herself.
"I'm sorry for indirectly ruining your plans, Moa. I guess I'll see you around." Yuusuke proceeded to turn around and go home. A flustered Moa turned around and went in the opposite direction.
