This was the moment I've waited for. I was going to find out the truth; well most of it.
I sat down in the chair closest to the desk, which Harry had used the desk to lean back on. He looked deep into thought as I settled down in my chair. Unsure of what he was going to tell me, or where to begin. His brow furrowed as he seemed at a lack of words; not believing that he was going to openly tell someone about his past.
He began to speak but I had cut him off.
"I'm not going to tell anyone......Your secret or what you're hiding, it's safe with me." I decided to keep Harry's past to myself. Something that I won't tell my father, something just for Harry and I to share. I gave him a small smile to try a reassure him. But the smile fell when I didn't receive any emotion back. Just a blank stare; the stare you get when someone is trying to figure you out. "I-I just want to know."
"Then I guess I should tell you." He took a few deep breaths before speaking again. "Well it began when about three years ago, when I met Aiden. I had recently come from something that was really rough for me, and I ran into Aiden. We became friends, but I needed a job. He offered me one, and that's where most of it all began."
"What was the job?" Fear was clearly present in my voice when I spoke. I was scared of what Harry would say. It could be anything, but the look on Harry's face told me it was anything but a normal job.
"I was a-"
"Harry, times up. Come on we have to leave and get you to your next appointment." Mr. Hampton interrupted us.
"Can't we just skip it for today? I'm tired of that fucking place." There was clear agony in Harry's voice.
"They said you have to go." Mr. Hampton sternly replied.
"Isn't talking to her the same thing?" He gestured his right hand to me, as a sat in silence observing their arguing conversation.
"Well.....I suppose. Let me just call her and ask." Mr. Hampton left his office to go call the women they were talking about.
"H-Harry?" My voice was quiet, not knowing how he would react to my question.
"Yes?"
"W-What was your appointment for?" I kept my head down, not wanting to see him heat up and get angry, but what happened was what I had least expected.
Harry moved from the desk and started to pace back and forth in front of me.
"Ever since this whole thing happened, I've been sent to therapist. They say she's supposed to help with my anger. But I don't see a difference."
"Oh," I wasn't quite sure how to react to what he had told me. Part of me was thankful he was getting help, but the other part scared me. How bad was Harry with his anger at its highest point?
Harry sensed me tense up.
"I don't take it out on other people," Relief washed through me until he spoke again. "Usually."
I felt uncomfortable in my seat, still frightened by the boy standing close to my chair. He came to the front of my chair leaning down and taking my hands from my laps. Harry pulled me up in one swift motion, bringing me close to him; hands enclosed between our chest.
"Never a women." I took my chances looking up at him. My eyes caught his bright green ones. My breathing was still heavy, not knowing of what emotion Harry was causing me.
The sound of someone clearing their throat broke us apart.
"Sorry to interrupt, but she said it's fine if you skip today's session." Mr. Hampton said to Harry.
"Alright, thanks."
"Guess I'll go now..."
"Jack, please leave." Harry had obviously gotten annoyed by Jack's unwillingness to leave. I was too busy watching the two talk to even realise that Harry's hands were still holding my own. As they started bickering again I pulled hands away Harry's, backing up slightly and sitting down in my chair again. He noticed but didn't object.
"Jack, just please leave." Sometimes they argued as if they were brothers, that you forget that Jack is Harry's attorney.
Jack had left, shutting the door behind him, leaving Harry and I to ourselves again. He took a seat beside me on the chairs armrest and started to talk again.
"Now where were we?" I looked up at Harry as he recalled his memory.
"You were telling me w-what your job was." I timidly answered.
"Oh yeah, that." Harry looked almost scared to tell me what his job was.
"I worked for Aiden, he had a low-key business going on, but he used me to scare the people that owed him money."
"What would they owe money for, Harry?" I asked.
"It was always different. But it was mostly money Aiden had provided them with to pay for something at a short notice, and they would have to pay them back in a short amount of time. No matter how much they borrowed." He cautiously peered at me as I took in the new information.
"H-Harry, what would y-you do if they didn't pay Aiden back?" My question looked like it pained Harry. Hoping that I wouldn't ask what would happen.
"I-I would usually beat them near death. Just enough so they knew Aiden was serious about getting his money back. But the last time it happened, the man was prepared and he had a gun. Now I'm here." Harry looked down at his hands, rubbing them back and forth. Nervousness clear. Before I even thought about what I was doing, I took his shaking hand in mine, rubbing his knuckles with my thumb.
"D-Did you like your job? Did y-you like beating them?"
"No, not at all. I did it because I owed Aiden. I had nothing, and Aiden gave me a lot, so I thought this was the only way to repay him for how he helped me. I didn't realise that it would turn me into a monster." Harry kept his head bowed, watching my thumb move over his marked knuckles. "Every time I went to do my job, I lost it."
His story had frightened me. Realising what Harry is capable of frightened me. He frightened me. How he said he lost it every time he did his job. But he also needed someone, to help him and guide him. He thought it was Aiden, he trusted the wrong person.
"You're not a monster, Harry. You just didn't know, you were confused." I gave a slight smile before I took my hand from his to pull out my phone and check the time. "I have to go soon, my dad will be expecting me home." I stood getting my bag from the top of the desk, my back facing Harry.
"Rae?" I turned to look at him.
"Yeah, Harry?"
I was taken back when came toward me and wrapped his long, lengthy arms around me. I involuntary stiffened up. Despite this conversation that let me know more about him, it didn't settle my thoughts as I hoped it would. He is still that same person that would beat people to a pulp if they owed money.
"Thank you." He whispered.
I nodded on his shoulder and gently rubbed his back.
"No, thank you for sharing. It was bold of you to trust a stranger."
"Well you don't have to be a stranger. Come visit me again? I would visit you but those bars are a real arse to break." He chucked.
"I'll think about it. Goodbye, Harry." I giggled.
"Goodbye Rae."
